HAB’s eat up all of the oxygen in the water as they decay, smothering aquatic vegetation and clogging the gills of fish and invertebrates. At this scale they can shut down water treatment plants and wreak havoc on coastlines. There’s no known remedy for HAB’s, it’s an ever growing international issue and one the Great Lakes of North America is battling, especially on Lake Erie, where this was taken. This is the result of pollution, heavy metals and excess phosphorus being introduced into water systems, fuel for HAB’s when temperatures increase which is only getting worse with climate change.
