This grey pileated finch is cared for by @institutovidalivre, an NGO that rehabilitates and releases Brazilian wild animals that are rescued by @ibama.gov from the wildlife black market/pet trade. Habitat loss is an even bigger threat to wild species. As today’s fires spread across the Amazon, they threaten untold numbers of animals, from monkeys to anteaters, fish to frogs. These fires are set to create short-lived fields for agriculture, but the long-term consequences are dire; without immense, intact rainforests, the rainfall patterns we need to grow crops will be altered, and that could cause massive food shortages. So in other words, when we save the little birds of the world, we’re actually saving ourselves.
