My friend Shin Murata, @muratashinwolf the ceramicist represented exclusively by Kaikai Kiki, has been diagnosed with cancer. I’m terribly shaken.
He has colon cancer apparently in the shape and size of tarako (cod roe), yet he had no subjective symptom at all. He’s 48.
There have been many creators of my own generation who have also been diagnosed with cancer in the recent years and they are each going through an uphill battle against the illness. I can only begin to imagine how they must feel. We creators are constantly drifting in the world of our own fantasies in our brains so we tend to forget about our bodies in the real world.
Shin Murata lives and works deep in the mountains up Kamo river, about 40-minute drive from Kyoto. He leads a quiet life with his wife, Fusako, @egifusako after getting married two years ago. They get loads of snow in the winter and suffer damages from typhoon-induced rain in the summer. Murata has long been throwing pots amidst such raging nature.
Around two years ago, he completely halted selling his works, wishing to achieve the ultimate state of ceramics production that he strives for, and has since been focusing exclusively on preparing the environment which would allow him to do so.
It was in this context that he received the diagnosis. I pray from the bottom of my heart for his swift, full recovery and look forward to the day he can present to the world his idea of ultimate form of ceramics he strives for.

友人であり、カイカイキキで専属取り扱い陶芸作家の村田森さん @muratashinwolf が癌告知を受けた、との事。物凄いショックです。
直腸癌で、腸がタラコの様になってしまっているとの事。しかも、自覚症状が全くなかったとの事。オン年48歳。僕の世代のクリエイターにも、癌になってしまわれた方が多くいらっしゃって、厳しい闘病生活を強いられていて、お気持ち察するに余りあります。
クリエイターは常に脳内のファンタジーの世界を揺蕩とうてるので、現実の自分身体を忘れがちです。
村田森さんは、京都から車で40分ほどの鴨川源流の山奥に工房兼住居を構えており、昨年ご結婚された奥様のふさこさん @egifusako と、ひっそりと暮らしています。冬はドカ雪、夏は台風による大雨被害で、停電、崖崩れ、道路の長期封鎖など、自然の猛威の中で作陶生活を送っていて、2年ほど前から、彼の目指す陶芸の境地を目指したい、との事で、販売する作品の制作を一切止めて、彼の目指す方向の達成だけに集中出来る環境を整えていました。ですが、そう言う時に、病気の告知。快癒すること、そして、村田森さんの目指される陶芸の極致を世に問う日が、1日でも早く来ることを心からお祈りしております。
