This photo was taken the day Ben and I legally married. On March 2017, we rented out an Airbnb and got our closest friends to witness it. My life changed forever that day and tbh I wish we could have kept it like that. But societal pressures kicked in 🤷🏻♀️ Check out my new video tackling this subject, and watch @SK-II's Official Instagram’s #ChangeDestiny docu-series for more on how they’re challenging conventional norms. I’d also love to hear your stories of dealing with these kinds of pressures in the comments!#skiipartner #timelines

I think with any situation where you experience societal pressures (planning a wedding, school, workplace, etc) it’s so important to surround yourself with people who not only know you deeply but more importantly, people who are the example of who you’d like to be. I would never heed the advice of someone I wouldn’t switch places with. My husband and I got married this past July after a little less than 4 months of engagement. We definitely felt the same societal pressures you all must’ve experienced too! “You’re getting married too soon. Push it back a year!” “You’ve GOT to have 2 dresses!” “Have you booked your dj AND band?” Those and a bunch more questions regarding minute details often unseen anyway bombarded us regularly. I truly wanted all the thrills and frills but realistically, it wasn’t going to happen, timing and budget wise. It really took friends and mentors in our corner to remind us of what we truly valued the most and keep the focus on our long term goals. We had a small, short ceremony, with brunch that followed afterwards, surrounded by 20 of our closest family members and friends. I’m so grateful for the perspective from our friends because it allowed us to put more focus on our marriage, not the wedding.

We just got married about a month and a half ago--and throughout the process of planning, we tweaked things to represent us. My ring is $80 from a Hawaiian company that specializes in inlay rings--it's gorgeous, cost effective, and perfectly matches my husband's ring. I dont care about getting an expensive ring, and that freed both myself and my now-husband from increased financial burden. We bought customized dragon cake toppers because they were beautiful, and we had the cake designer put scales on the cake to tie the dragons in. I spent $500 on a dress because I refused to believe I had to spend over $1000 to find one I loved. Also the dress had pockets--bam! 👍 I also didnt follow the "something old" portion of that whole saying...because it wasn't worth the time or stress to find. I think when you find ways to make your wedding day special to you and ignore the naysayers, it can turn out to be just perfect. ❤️ Societal norms can be boring anyway, and are meant to be broken. 😘

Girl I feel you. My husband and I had to do the same for immigration issues. Thanks for being honest and sharing about this...it's something I feel like is still so taboo for no reason. When we were planning our wedding we also had moments when we wished we just kept it at our civil ceremony since it was so stressful. But looking back on it now we're so happy we did the second wedding with friends and family. 😊

Thank you for making the video you did Jenn. I feel like people don’t talk enough about how the culture around weddings puts so much stress and strain on people when it’s supposed to just be about love. I know I experienced a lot of the things you did and at the end of the day I don’t regret my wedding but I would probably do things differently. Thanks again for making the video; it really spoke to me 💕💕

Loved the video because I went through the same exact thing! We eloped first, I have a religious mother and had a overbearing wedding decorator.
Everything worked out in the end🙏🏻 but was extremely stressed up until the day of 😔
Anyone interested I have a lifestyle blog and I’ll be breaking down the wedding and marriage with lots of tips really soon💕

I’ve never really wanted kids, when I was little I even said I wanted two dogs instead, but for years people have told me that I’ll change my mind once I get married yadda yadda but I was approved to get my tubes tied last Friday and I’m so excited!!
