At its peak, Pompeii was a prosperous city of 11,000 people known for its rich soil, cultural attractions, and profitable port. Located just 8km away from Mount Vesuvius, many of the ancient city people didn’t even realize that the mountain looming over Pompeii was actually a volcano. Up until this point in European history, there wasn’t even a word for volcano in the Latin-based lexicon. To this day, Mount Vesuvius remains the only active volcano on mainland Europe. In an ironic twist of fate, the people of Pompeii gathered together fall of year 79 (after Christ) to celebrate Vulcan—the Roman God of fire. The newly discovered volcano spewed nearly 1.5 million tons of lava per second as it traveled from Mount Vesuvius to Pompeii, with temperatures of up to 1,000 degrees Celsius.
