We nominate @meherwanirani’s Southern-influenced take on Daal Makhani for your Monday night dinner. This recipe, which combines his American Southern influences (like black-eyed peas, ham and collards) with the traditional Indian flavors of his heritage, is well worth a little planning—the lentils and beans require a long soak—but after that it comes along quickly. (Plus, a country ham topping never hurts.) Tap the link in our bio for the recipe and to learn more about the Brown in the South dinner series, featuring chefs of Indian and Sri Lankan descent who have made the South their home. 📷: @protazio

@foodandwine you need to honour the comments below and correctly edit the name of the dish. You also need to educate yourselves on Indian dishes since you embarrased yourself by incorrecting naming this dish daal makhani when those who are very familiar with Indian cuisine know daal makhani is vegetarian and beans and ham would never be included 🙄🤭🤨😑....cultural appropriation es tu?

With all the resources at your disposal, and a supposedly stellar editorial team, what an utter shame to call this abomination “dal makhni”. Clearly you need some authentic voices and cultural diversity on your team to stop you from making such blunders. Thoroughly disgusted. Our food has thousands of years of history and culture behind it. This is disrespectful and just plain wrong.

Hi @foodandwine this is not dal makhani. Dal makhani does not have black eyed peas in it. It’s primary ingredients are whole black dal (urad) and red kidney beans (rajma). The beauty of this dish is that it is 100% vegetarian. It doesn’t need any ham, meat, animal products to make it delicious. Please do your research before slapping a name of your choice on a dish.

Daal makhani is made with lentils. NOT beans, or black eyed peas as you’ve used. And ham on top? Ham is basically never used in Indian cooking, so I’m not sure there is even a tiny fraction of traditional Daal Makahni in this dish to be able to call it that. #fail

Perhaps try doing research on the cultural food you so poorly attempted to mimic. Also NEVER throw ham on top of a terrible rendition of "daal makhani" and think it's cute. This entire dish looks so unappetizing the way you've done it

You claim that a “country ham topping never hurts,” when in actuality, I have gotten a country ham topping lodged in my esophagus. That hurt a lot! #grannywisom #watchthatham #countryhamdoeshurt #quailinmywhale
