Another from Minny and the James Boys. The production was “site specific”. Anne Hamburger, founder and producer of En Garde Arts, would find interesting locations in NYC and commission the writing of a play to be performed in that location. In this case, she had chosen three locations in Central Park, for three different short plays. The great playwright Anna Cascio, with whom I had worked on her play about the Robert Kennedy assassination, June 8, 1968, was asked to write a play to be performed at the Central Park Dairy. Minny and the James Boys was her literally fantastic piece about a love triangle between Minny Temple, her cousin Henry James (yes, that Henry James, who had been a regular visitor to this area of Central Park in the early 20th century), and Jesse James, whom Minny had recently met, and fallen for, in Purgatory (not a typo...). Most of our audience had walked to the Dairy from Bow Bridge, where another play had been performed, but many of them simply discovered the production as we performed...the audience had been encouraged, before the performance, to get as close as they dared to the actors, so as to be able to hear all the dialogue (these were all performed in public spaces during “regular” evenings in the park). More than occasionally, we would have to go around, or politely between audience members as the action progressed...With the “fourth wall” obliterated, it was a liberating experience: the lines between the actors and the audience were literally nonexistent...and made for exciting and fun storytelling. :)
