The Nineteenth Amendment, ratified on August 18, 1920, states: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”
It was the work of lifetimes: many of the women who devoted their lives to women's suffrage didn't live to see it done, and women of color had to fight for voting rights long beyond 1920.
Alice Paul, seen here sewing a star onto the National Women's Party ratification flag, waged a new campaign just a few years after the suffrage victory. She spent the last five decades of her life fighting to pass the Equal Rights Amendment, which remains unratified.
When asked why she persisted, she quoted her late father: “When you put your hand to the plow, you can’t put it down until you get to the end of the row.” With thanks to our forebears for all they've sown, the work continues.

Hoping Alice Paul was different than her peer suffragettes, and fought for voting rights for ALL people, not just white women. POC have had to do their own work for equality, bc white women prefer to protect their privilege over the rights of POC and equality for everryyyone. Let’s work harder on lifting marginalized communities to the same level of safety and protection as a white woman in America. And lets all go after the rung of WHITE MEN in America. ONLY THEN will we all be EQUAL. #blacklivesmatter

People over the age of 75 shouldn’t be allowed to vote because they are not likely to be alive to see the changes their voting for. Only those who are likely to feel the influence of their votes should be allowed to vote. Change my mind @hillaryclinton

@nrasb actually I was thinking more along the way of El Paso victims. I’m sure they would love to hear about your 2nd amendment rights has nothing to do with republicans or democratic. But I know your 2nd amendment means more correct🤔
