Democracy. Do you think it really exists? Is the democratically elected Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Adern, the true leader of New Zealand? No. The Crown is. The British Commonwealth Crown. Who is this Common - Wealth? Queen Elizabeth II? When you Google "Who is the Crown?" you get led down a rabbit hole. I challenge anybody out there to define The Crown. Does The Crown represent Democracy or is that a sysyem that exists as a veil beneath the ultimate unquestionable rule of The Crown? As a Democracy can New Zealanders vote The Crown out? Because if not, we are NOT living in a Democracy. #protectihumatao @panianewton

The Crown is the British Royal Family and whomever acts on behalf of/with them. NZ acts under a constitutional monarchy, like the UK does, with the Parliament acting on behalf of the Crown. The Crown is now relatively powerless, and has been for many years - the Royal Prerogative of the Queen and the Crown in general is delegated to the Parliaments under the Crown. The Crown, realistically, does nothing more than sign off laws (it hasn’t blocked a law in centuries) and conduct charity work. At this point, it’s just an institution for show and act as the face of the Commonwealth - if it did any more, the public would call them out on it (there’s a reason why the Crown doesn’t get involved or even speak politically anymore). I personally agree to a decent extent with you, as even as a Brit I think it’s a defunct system that sucks up too much taxpayer money simply to maintain it, however, as far as it’s impact in the modern world goes, it’s minor at best. While The Crown prevents a supposedly full democracy, it also doesn’t due to its complete lack of power.The current issues in NZ may have been a result of British colonisation, I agree, however any shortcomings in NZ that the Government is showing towards the Maori is not a result anymore of the Crown and hasn’t been for many years. The Crown isn’t the ventriloquist of the Commonwealth anymore, the Crown is a ventriloquist with alive and working puppets it can’t realistically control anymore. For past oppression - absolutely blame the Crown, I do too. For present and future oppression, particularly politically, blame NZ Parliament - with or without the Crown right now, and a supposedly full democracy, the current problems and hopeful resolutions still stem from the NZ Parliament.

For those who do not know NZs form of government and who are curious the difference between the US and NZs forms:
New Zealand is a unitary parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy. This means that our head of state is a sovereign (currently Queen Elizabeth II). The Queen is represented in NZ by the Governor-General, Dame Patsy Reddy. ... NZ also uses the system of 'responsible government'.
The United States is a representative democracy. This means that our government is elected by citizens. Here, citizens vote for their government officials. These officials represent the citizens' ideas and concerns in government.
Ok, so you're calling for the following to happen?

You believe the Maori people are suffering because of "The Crown?" The Native Americans (my people I'm mixed) in the United States are still suffering even after the colonies years after years had rejected Britain. Ex. North Dakota Natives on reservations were ruled out by the courts in not being eligible to vote in elections. This goes against their constitutional rights. I wonder if your country was under our system how your Native population would be affected 🤔. As an outsider observing in, the people in your country have more unity and are more culturally tied. Culture seems to be well respected there whereas in the US, "non-American" cultures are not. We have to fight hard for that respect.

@tinkiewinkie007 Thank you for that insight. I believe indigenous concerns need to be collaboratively addressed on a global level. Eagle Rock, Maoana Kea & Ihumatao are an example of the sane disease being identified, a cure or remedy needs vocal collaboration because individually they fail beneath the established media rethoric. A larger demonstration of global scale is possible but not yet attempted because the leaders of these causes absord the energy not expand upon it. Maori are having their Rights purchased away by Treaty Settlements its like offering a starving child a cookie. With current trend I'd approximate the rights of Maori to last another two generations before The Crown shifts gears on its longer drafted plan to extinguish native opposition.

Being a democracy without a crown still has not given us in the United States much more power in my opinion. When election years are in play it seems politicians will say and promise the moon, the stars, and a pot of gold at the end of a thousand rainbows in order to be elected. Then once the voting booths have closed and they have assumed their offices, it's back to the status quo. So in a democracy who really is in charge? It surely does not feel like the people.

In Denmark we have a representative democracy. We vote for a party based on their ideology and promises - then they go ahead and do whatever the fuck they want to do their entire term in office. It’s not democracy. Especially not an effective one, when those people places in power by the elected party are only there to make money(career politicians), instead of making a difference. It’s painful to watch it getting worse election by election.

Maori do not fit the Westminster system of politics we have here in NZ it's not designed with Maori in mind and was brought in with the colonisers. It puts Maori exactly where the coloniser wants us. At the wrong end of all negative statistics. Democracy then does not favour Maori nor indigenous people it favours a majority. This is one reason why Maori seats should be entrenched and also Maori wards on councils and across DHBs.
