Photo by @daisygilardini | Despite the fact that the brown bear is the most widely distributed of the eight species of bears, its North American range has declined precipitously. Once extending from Alaska to Mexico, its territory south of Canada is now limited to Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Washington. Coastal bears’ diets include salmon and clams, which provide the nutrients necessary to build the fat reserves for winter hibernation. Protecting these coasts means protecting the land ecosystem that plays such an integral role in maintaining a healthy marine environment.
