One month ago 33 kūpuna arrested protecting Maunakea
One month ago today, the state arrested 33 kūpuna who were and remain on the Maunakea Access Road to block TMT construction vehicles. The TMT and their suporters would like you to believe that they have the law on their side. Kānaka Maoli come from a tradition of justice and these kūpuna are part of a genealogy of kānaka who have confronted the law when either unjust or entirely false, yet backed with superior force.
Liliʻuokalani was arrested and imprisoned in her own home in 1895. Over 300 people who fought to restore the Queen in 1895 were arrested in the same year, including Joseph Nawahī, Robert Wilcox and Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole. Hawaiians, and many others, were arrested in the Territorial period for fighting the white supremacist capitalist sugar oligarchy through union organizing.
Hawaiians and non-Hawaiians alike were arrested in the 70's fighting land evictions, the use of Kaho'olawe for Navy bombing practice, and so farmers could access stream waters. In 1990, 141 people were arrested protecting the Waokele o Puna rainforest from goethermal development. And there have been many more.
When the law is unjust or only in place through force and coersion, we have a duty to disobey it. We are protectors and we always have been in the face of corporate interests who desire to exploit our lands and poeple. Aloha nui i nā kūpuna aloha ʻāina ʻoiaʻiʻo. E kūpaʻa kākou!

@prideofgypsies our government is corrupted in every way possible. The "freedome" as they say we have is not a freedome, our freedom is owned by corporations. The pursuit of happiness? Social mobility in the United States is dead. Career choices are increasingly limited. As for working hard and earning more, consider this: Between 1969 and 2008 the average US income went up by $11,684. How much of that went to the top 10? All of it. Income for the remaining 90 percent actually went down. These changes didn't just happen. Wealthy individuals and corporations made it happen – and they're still at it. Meanwhile, Corporate America's wholesale theft of our individual liberties has been rebranded as a fight for … the corporation's individual liberty.

For thousands and thousands of years ancient peoples revered certain places in the planet as spiritual and holy places. Just because some government dick now wants to rape another piece of land for profit that it is supposed to be acceptable? Shame on you!! Soon there will be no humans left because greed is the God now. Sad times ....

My heart goes to Hawaii and the hawaiian people. I am so sad to see it is so hard to protect your Mauna Kea. I went there for my honey moon, and I felt how special it is. There is something magical, spiritual, in all the Hawaiian territory. It should be protected and preserved!

Jason! Here on Brazil we are facing huge problems with deforestation of the Amazon! 💔 I'm glad to see news like that one you shared, of people fighting for our planet and nature! We need more conscious people willing to defend it and raising consciousness around the globe!

I'm sitting here watching this video and all the pores on my body are visible, this makes me sick to see how they are treating our elders. My eyes are pooling over and my heart aches. Stand strong and Fight hard for this too shall pass. We are watching here in Guyana too.

Finally! just saw on HLN story about this desecration. Most people I talk to about Maunankea have no clue. It's heart breaking. Thank you for bringing attention of the world to the righteous banning of this telescope! Much love and strength to you and all Hawaiians.
