Over seven years ago I thought I heard a baby crying in the bushes outside my house. It ended up it was an eight-month-old stray cat kitten. I pet her a bit - she was friendly for a stray - and I gave her a can of tuna. My parents came to visit and said, “I think there’s a crying baby outside.” I said, “No that’s just a cat who sounds like a crying baby.” For a couple more days I fed her and pet her. I started calling her “Emily”, because that just seemed like her name and, when you’re naming a stray animal you never expect to see again, the pressure to come up with an inventive name is almost nil. As the days went by, I hoped to see “Missing Cat” notices on the local telephone poles, but no go. This kitten was one of L.A.’s many unloved, unclaimed cats, whether feral or abandoned or a runaway from a bad situation. So, with the help of a neighbor, I corralled her into a dog crate and took her into the house. She darted under the couch and stayed there for two days before coming out. My plan was to foster her out. As you can see in this photo today, HER plan was a bit different. She still cries like a human baby; it’s not necessarily a sign of distress, just her weird way of saying hi. She’s a complete pain-in-the-ass, but I’ve never once regretted taking her in. Happy #Caturday, everyone, from me and #emilymonster. #cat #cats #catsofinstagram #adoptdontshop #❤️

My baby, Severus Snape, was born under a barn. He came to me from a bad situation and had to be wrapped up like a kitten burrito and held like a newborn for a few days for him to finally settle in his stress and anxiety, and I guess through all my mothering, he quickly became attached. He follows me everywhere. He cries when I go to bed at night, and is usually the first thing I see in the morning greeting me with purrs, kisses and head butts. He too, can be a pain in the ass, but I wouldn't give it up for the world. His brother, Sirius Black, my newest edition, is equally as spoiled, and is currently curled on my hip and I lie on the couch writing this. Cats are a blessing. Animals are a blessing. I'm so happy that you took Emily in, she looks so content with you and your family. ❤️

That’s so sweet. I got my baby, Spooky, pretty much the same way. Saw a skin and bones cat with a broken tail outside, and started tossing her a few of my cat’s treats. She scrambled to get them like her life depended on it. I left food out for her, and eventually she started coming out of the bushes to greet us when we came home. We named her Spooky because she was afraid of everything, we found her around Halloween, and she was the same color as the foliage, so she would pop up and scare us. We got her into the house, she fell asleep for a few hours because she was finally able to sleep without fearing for her life, and three years later, she’s still my Spooky baby. 🖤

So cool you reply to people’s comments! We have a cat that cried like a baby too! All the cats we have gotten have been from the pound or stray, feral cats..2 were abandoned in a shoe box and we bottle fed them when getting another from the pound. Without thinking we took home 3 in a day! Had to bottle feed 2 for 6 weeks. Family now! Even if a pain at times!

That is such a sweet rescue story. I saved my little tuxedo from a very busy street. Cars were just crazy driving. All I could think of when I picked him up, “I better not drop this little kitty. If he darts off into traffic my kid will be in therapy for years.” Thankfully, we made it to the car and my son hasn’t had any cat related therapy. 🖤 #Cutes

7 years?!? Say it isn’t so. 👵 It feels odd to be so invested in the happiness of a cat I’ve only ever observed from afar. I remember when you were trying to find someone to adopt her and every time you post a pic of her I smile about how she had already found her human. Happy #Caturday, #emilymonster!

My little cat Annie was a stray and we took her in five years ago. She loved us straight away and you could tell she was so happy to have found us. There’s so many cats out there who are looking for their forever homes so well done for rescuing this little lady 😍
