This might seem random ... but there is a reason. I just heard that an old friend of mine who used to work on our promotion in Germany many years ago is poorly. Her colleague sent me this picture to remind me of old days. And it struck me probably nobody has seen this in recent times. It’s a moment in Munich in December 1980, when we were being presented with a gold disc (one of many, thanks to these guys’ hard work) for sales in Germany (on Electrola, as it was). This shows - left to right - Werner Pöppel, Gaby Zangerl, me, a very youthful Jim Beach, Jochen Krauss, who sent me the pic, Freddie, John and Roger. Obscured behind Freddie is Paul Prenter, now known to you all as a character in a film, and something of a bad guy, although, of course, he wasn’t ALL bad ! Biopic movies are always, necessarily, a montage of simplifications (otherwise the film would be years long and unwatchable !) But hopefully distilled in a responsible way to tell a decent story. Swipe for a zoom in. Bri

I really don't care what your reasoning is for this latest betrayal of Freddie. What I know is that YOU KEEP DOING IT. Over and over and over again.
.
Anyone who cares about Freddie should care most about Prenter's EXTREME betrayal and not marginalize it into something like "yeah Prenter wasnt all THAT bad."
.
I nursed AIDS patients in the 80's. At that time, hospitals and clinics were getting bomb threats. And people were advocating for AIDS patients to be sent to some island like leppers used to be sent (if they weren't advocating for their premature deaths, saying things like all gays should be lures into hospitals for "tests" and then gas them all to death to rid the world of the disease)
.
Gay people were being fired from their jobs, not allowed into restaurants for irrational fears of the disease being spread by contaminated food. People were afraid to use the same bathrooms as gay people ...
.
And yes, Queen's recording or publishing deals would be at great risk if the public/fans turned on Freddie due to AIDS and homophobia.
.
THAT is the context in which Prenter went to the tabloids.
.
Yes actually, anyone who could go and essentially tell tabloids that Freddie was a gay whore who was likely on the verge of contracting AIDS himself, that he presumed/feared he had it already....
.
....in a world where gay people were getting death threats and literally treated as though they were more dangerous than rats spreading the black plague...
.
Yes, someone who could do that IS "all that bad"..
.
P.S. NHS in England AND Northern Ireland were caring for AIDS patients for free.
.
So its HOGWASH that Prenter needed the money for healthcare costs. Its not like he had no affordable access to healthcare.

I really like the behind-the-scenes stories you write here (and kudos especially on "montage of simplifications" and "distilled in a responsible way" -- you've got a #waywithwords)! I feel silly now, but I must not have paid close enough attention, because I always thought Paul's last name was "Printer!" 🤦 Anyway, it's kind of you to acknowledge that his nefariousness was not all-consuming. I'll take your word for it, since you knew him. But I must confess that I, too, saw him in an unflattering light, with the one exception being when, in the film, he was in the car with Freddie and he talks about his father's reaction to his being gay. There you do see his pain, which was touching and sympathy-provoking (and very well portrayed by Allen Leech).

This is indescriptible 💜 I feel the movie gave us the chance to feel part of moment like this, and seeing picture from the past is simply magical, Freddy it’s a legend and I didn’t even have the chance to live your music with him alive on your best moment because I was a baby, but the movie filled that gap for me and made me feel I lived all that moments with you. ❤️Thank you guys you are a big part of my daily routine.

Photos are so amazing, you can sit and really Ponder that moment in life, that second captured. Freddy looks so full of Pride. You all look so happy. It's pretty amazing that the bad boyfriend is completely obscured. I wonder if the photographer did that intentionally. Prayers for your colleague. Thanks for sharing

The critics of the movie can go play on the freeway (my dad’s joking euphemism for get lost). It was more than ‘hopefully ‘ Bri, and more than a decent story, words fail me, as do your kindness and generosity towards us all, you have touched my heart.

I see the two people to the left, Werner Pöppel and Gaby Zangerl, are holding A Night at the Opera, but what are the double albums everybody else are holding? One has a greenish tint and looks a tad like maybe News of the World, but I can’t tell.
