Stanford coach Thom Glielmi said: “I was very disappointed Malone was not selected for team. I believe his work and performance at camp and Pan Ams merited he get the nod, but then again I’m his coach. There are always deserving athletes that are left off the team - there are only so many team spots. Malone has taken to heart the NTC’s directive that we all need to up our difficulty. Only Mikulak, Modi and Whittenburg now have higher difficulty. And while he’s been very good in practice with the upgrades, it cost him a spot on the team to not be successful on one event at his first senior international meet. I think it is a harsh learning experience, but one I know he will grow from.
