keralogan This makes me both livid and devastated...I come from a tribe from the Oregon coast, the confederated tribes of Siletz "Indians". Long have we been fighting for our sacred lands, our lands of prayer and ceremony, and now we fight the pollution of the Siletz Bay River that is polluting the reservation's drinking water and killing the marine life. My favorite lesson I've learned from the polynesian beliefs are that it is not that ocean is what separates us, but it is the ocean that unites us, the water is the veins of our mother Earth that pumps life into us all. Indigenous peoples have ALWAYS had to fight to keep our sacred ancestral lands and to protect the burial lands, to protect our ways and our people to preserve for our children.... They're literally ripping our mother apart from the inside out and still we fight, because we must. We must do everything on our power to save our ways. They will kill us all to make a buck, because if they're rich in their lifetime, what becomes of us after they died is not their concern.... Money and riches cannot be taken with you when you leave this life. We must make sure that we leave this world better off because of what we did to save it than what we did to kill it. Our work is important, to fight is never a useless endeavor. Keep strong, keep UNITED, keep safe.

anfwieland People and their history and cultures need to respected and protected!!! This is wrong trying to destroy this sacred piece of land and the culture heritage that it belongs too! This is similar to events that occurred with taking, destroying and displacing so much of the land and people of the Native American People and which should not have happened how it did let us not repeat a similar tragedy and violation of a sacred part of a special culture instead honor it let it be!!! For those who can not understand or choose not to think of how you might feel if the situation and circumstances were on the other foot and business and greedy people and organizations were trying to take away something that means of such great importance to you and your family or history? Like maybe building the telescope on the lawn of the United States White House wait what why not? I mean its not something of strong importance Its just a building that represents a part our historical culture as Americans and democracy so why is that more important than something such as this! Its literally just a building the KuKiaiMauna is something truly sacred that has been around much longer and has much more meaning it was not man made and can not be rebuilt like some building! Go somewhere else with your telescope!!!!

kakinflag Sadly this is happening on Native land here in the Southwest all the time... one example is the Navajo and Hopi tribes have been in litigation for the past 10 years over the San Francisco peaks not having reclaimed water blown onto the peaks to allow for a longer ski season on a small ski hill here. They have done ceremonies there since the beginning of time and the sacred peaks are part of their creation stories. Sadly no one cares in the white world and natives have lost several court battles. The Hopi are still fighting.. There are so many more gondola to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and the Supai people fighting, uranium mining on the reservation that has destroyed their watershed and caused so much cancer, part of Chaco Canyon being opened to development/mining/fracking (this area is beginning of civilization) so many more!! Helps to have someone famous with money on your aide though, hope you win your fight... good luck.

WHY WASTE ALL THAT MONEY ON RESEARCH THAT MOST LIKELY WONT BENEFIT US IN ANY WAY? WE NEED TO FIX OUR HOME FIRST BEFORE ABANDONING IT. SECONDLY, THERE IS PLACES LIKE SPAIN THAT ACTUALLY WANT THE TMT. HAWAII WAS ILLEGALLY OVERTHROWN. WE HAVE A SAY IN WHAT WE DO AND DONT WANT ON OUR LAND. do you not care if someone built a building on your family’s grave? i’m pretty sure it’s humane to care. WE ALREADY HAVE MANY TELESCOPES ALL OVER OUR MOUNTAINS. ITS ABOUT TIME THEY STOP BUILDING MORE CUZ IT DOESNT SEEM LIKE ITS DOING SHIT. why waste time investing into that when we can be actually making changes in our lives rn. i don’t understand what point ur tryna prove cuz obviously it’s not reasonable enough.

jhesskeeptraveling yo that mountain is so beautiful and so important the kingdom of hawaii. There are like 13 telescopes up there already mon. Why do you need another? It almost seems like they are trying to telescope upgrades? are they other ones obsolete? I don't how telescope lenses work, are they concave or convex? Possibly find a way to retrofit that the other telescopes. I understand technology is important or innovation and finding the origin of the universe. Has there been an environmental impact study done? How can this be mitigated dude? Seriously the Hawaiian peeps have been illegally occupied since 1895 and they don't want the telescope there. _mindy_love_ SAD So very sad that this is what people have lowered themselves to.the complete utter lack of empathy towards what this could do to the beautiful, natural terrain they are destroying by building some man made piece if sh*it to observe what? Billions of dollars spent on this project that will most likely turn out to be another flop? What are they expecting to find? What a tragedy to know , thousands of our homeless, some single Mothers who are sick ( like myself ) still struggling to take care of their children, despite .. cannot catch a break but they can spend billions on another eye sore that is just contributing to the destruction of our once beautiful environment. Kudos go out to all who are fighting to keep your land beautiful. Keep fighting! May God help us all!
