ONE TRIBE. Human race. A huge mahalo to the members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe that came to the mauna yesterday to share their dances, support, love & solidarity with us. It means a lot for the people of standing rock to come to the mauna because we have kanaka here who have stood and stayed on their frontlines as well. That’s what it’s all about, standing with eachother and being there for eachother in times of need.

@huntnasunrise I serve the living, not the dead.
And look at what declaring lands “sacred” has done to life in the Middle East, Africa, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Mexico, and beyond.
One of the core reasons for declaring a land sacred by many peoples was to use these places as alters for ritualizing murder, infanticide, and more. Innocent people were tossed into volcanoes and hurled off cliffs, had organs cut out of them while alive and ritually butchered to appease the “gods,” out of nothing more than irrational fears about things they didn’t understand.
And Mauna Kea was one of these places. Yes, precolonial Hawaiians ritually murdered their own all around and on the slopes of Mauna Kea. You can still find some of the remains.
Relics like the pyramids and Great Wall are monuments to human brutality and suffering. I’d happily replace those with modern architectural wonders devoted to human flourishing and the pursuit of knowledge. I’d even be happy to be the one to wield the first shovel.
There is nothing more sacred than helping the whole of humanity to move forward.
Like a wise man once said, let the dead bury their own.
There is no greater honor than to serve the living.
We can and should remember our past. But we must grow and mature beyond it. Our histories are better suited for books and museums, in art and performance, and for celebratory occasions that remind us of who we once were. But we cannot remain trapped in our past anymore than we can remain forever in our childhoods.
I’m of largely Irish descent, but I have no interest in worshipping Celtic gods or speaking Gaelic. And if a mountain existed in Ireland that was well suited to advancing humanity with a research institution I’d be completely supportive. More so for an observatory.
We must ALL move forward together as one race, for one race is precisely what we actually are🙏🏼

@shyboto5 that’s one slippery slope you’re running up.
The HPD has hundreds of confirmed death threats against TMT supporters. Go talk to them.
There have been no reported death threats against protestors that I know of or can confirm.
And that’s just death threats. There have been thousands of threats of beatings and intimidation.
Would you also like me to DM you screen shots of the accusations and abuses I’ve received in private messages? Some people have made plainly suggestive comments to me that they would like to see me have this conversation in person with them, clearly indicating I’d get beat down if I did.
While those at the Mauna are behaving (largely due to police presence and cameras everywhere) there’s no shortage of evidence that many are willing to threaten and harm those in support of the project.
But this is not where I want to focus energy. The most important thing is Hawaii’s economic and educational future. The TMT and astronomy are essential to that future, one in which many jobs will be automated away.
The future will continue to increasingly require scientific literacy and skill. This doesn’t mean everyone will have to be a scientist and mathematician but it does mean that a greater awareness and embrace of the sciences will be crucial. And astronomy will prove to be a better direction than most to go in. It’s far less environmentally impactful than almost anything else. It’s also a very awe inspiring and tangible medium, much more than a lot of other scientific fields that require much more rigorous abstract thought.

@celluloidsorbet You like to hear yourself speak and I’m certain re read your words more times than normal??? I simply stated facts from your paragraphs of BS and your opinion not fact btw NOTHING you have written has bn facts. I don’t conversant or care to educate anyone about my culture I feel will not comprehend,no matter how I word it. From your paragraph above your mind is made up and why NO ONE on this thread has cared to converse with you? You think like a colonizer so therefore you are and why you have no place on this post. This is a post ab culture and the love of our sacred Mother Earth and all she holds sacred, two things you have yet to comprehend after 61 responses to your initial post. Decolonize and then we might could have a conversation.... Nah I doubt it!!! Later gator

@celluloidsorbet - - Thats some petty ass shit i gotta say, but none of those people ONLINE even represents the Aloha being shown at the Mauna. Of course that instagram account supporting tmt is sus for posting and nitpicking parts of what are obviously longer conversations being exchanged between a Mauna Kea supporter and the opposition. Some of the comments in those very post made by tmt supporters are also hypocritical and disrespectful. Imo SOME of those threats seems to be a response to a nagative comment made by the tmt supporter they are in a disagreement with but is not shown, hmmm. I cant trust anything without the full content. Majority of protecting the Mauna is very peaceful and that only the few online make noise.

@celluloidsorbet - Not a slipper slop at all. Also even without the cameras and law enforcements there the People at the Mauna would still act the same way. As Hawaiians have ALWAYS practice peacful "protests" by displaying there culture customs. And no thanks but im not intrested in seeing any of your dms im sure u might have some tho seeing as you are very active in "voicing" your support for tmt and the "technologies" that sponded from telescopes as you have claim on multiple posts as if tmt is going to contribute to that, even tho its sole propuse is just to look into deep space. @celluloidsorbet Tantrum? You can not explain our culture to someone who is not culturally inclined nor do they care to understand, listen or learn. A very wise elder once told me knowledge and understanding are only meant for certain ones bc all won’t comprehend nor care to,that’s you. You won’t comprehend bc you weren’t raised in our culture, period. May you be blessed and more open to understanding in your future conversations. Bc Mother Earth needs everyone to save what’s left of her!!! She is the bigger picture...
