I work 48 hours a week, I put myself through school and I am a single mother. I’m in the spectrum where I make too much money but I don’t. I have to put myself in debt on a credit card and pay it slowly off through out that semester because after all I still have to pay to live and buy the necessities of life. Since I’ve used my credit card, I not only owe what I’ve paid for tuition and books but I now owe an insanely high interest rate on that balance due to interest the credit card company charges. It’s a endless cycle of debt. Yes, it won’t last forever. I’ll eventually graduate and get a better job. Or at least that’s how it’s supposed to work. I’m 29 years old and if I know anything about life is that it is neither black or white. I’m only one injury away from my whole world crashing down. I’m only one totaled car away from everything I worked becoming nonexistent. I’m only one child custody battle away from having to put everything I worked so hard on the back burner. I’m only a single mother, who works 48 hours a week and goes to school to try to defy the odds and statistics. There needs to be a better way.

I work 60 to 70/hrs a week at $30/hr (incentivized pay scale - the harder you work the more you make) to save for school in order to pay cash without loans. I do manual labor in a warehouse, lifting 40-100,000 pounds per day, for 12-14 hour shifts. Oh, and I weigh 104lbs. I have lifted boxes of meat that weigh more than I do. No one should have to work themselves nearly to death to avoid paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loan interest. College is outlandishly priced, and student loans need a much much lower interest rate cap - perhaps one that has a scale to it. If you borrow 20,000, maybe the interest is 3-7%, but if you borrow 20,000 plus it should be much lower.

I got an Associate's degree in business from a community college while working 2 jobs and having a toddler at home. I still regret not finishing out my bachelor's degree but at the time i was exhausted, never got to see my little girl, and something had to give. Granted, i take ownership of my own decisions, i was very young when i had my daughter and that delayed college a bit, but if i could go back i wouldnt change a damn thing. But now i just pray that my brilliant daughter, whose college i probably wont be able to afford, gets a massive scholarship. And i wonder how many brilliant minds have never reached their full potential purely because they couldnt afford it.

Does everyone understand that the Gov took over student lending during the Obama admin? Bernie isn’t asking universities to teach for free. He’s willing to let them continue to jack up their prices for worthless degrees that the government issues loans for (charging interest of course) and then force other people (who aren’t receiving the degrees) to involuntarily pay them off. That’s not free, it’s robbery. With Technology, education should be getting cheaper not more expensive but because the government is involved, colleges can continue raising prices because the gov is involved.

@berniesanders I’m a single parent who works full time and goes to college full time... it ain’t easy. My GPA IS 2.74 but could be much higher if I wasn’t working. In the meantime the other parent doesn’t follow the custody agreement and is 30,000 behind in child support. Even though I do make a “living wage” its not livable when you are providing for multiple people by yourself. I also uber, door dash,, postmates and work as a part time travel agent. I my whole life is work or do something for someone else. Thats no way to live let me tell ya!

I am a Bernie supporter... but please don’t tell me our youth entering the workforce is upset at putting in a little extra 10 hours to work a total of 50 to make ends meet. You’re not supposed to have it all right when you graduate. You’re supposed to use that degree to get in the door. Then work a little hard and it’ll pay off in the end. Some young graduates need to be reminded that is that have been working for years to get where we are have been through that too and it will come in time with some effort on their part.
