On my recent poll, 85% chose “Yes, I would consider adopting a deaf dog”. I was pleasantly surprised by the result. I also have a lot of respect for those who honestly answered “No” as choosing a dog is a “lifetime” decision we are committing to.
Training a deaf dog alone is not a huge challenge if you are somewhat dog savvy, except for the recall. (Come when called) But the biggest challenge many deaf dog parents might face is that deaf dogs have a tendency to have OCD, just like BB used to have. With that being said, I would consider adopting another deaf dog in the future again. I enjoy training with BB using only sign. It forces me to be more precise and clear with my communication. And I love that she can sleep through thunderstorms, fireworks, and doorbells. 😁
In this video, I asked her to
Come
Sit
Sit pretty
Show teeth/air bark
Spin
Down
Chin down
Happy training!

Love how speedy she is! I'd definitely consider adopting a deaf dog, but my only queries/concerns would be training a recall/getting their attention, and I'd be a little worried about letting them off lead. How did you train this with BB? I used to spend some time with a 16yr old deaf BC at a training school and she was amazing ❤️ I used to talk to her all the time even though she couldn't hear me!

To be honest, I don’t even know how you can do it. I had one for a while. He was already 13 or 14 when I adopted him and therefore he didn’t need much training. He just loved being around me and got lots of love. I am not sure I would know how to train the young one though. I am still struggling when training my dogs properly 😅

Did you find it took her longer to mature as a puppy? I am working with a deaf miniature Australian shepherd and he is very distracted all the time and has trouble concentrating for more than a couple of minutes. He is 4 months old, so I don’t have a lot of huge expectations at the moment but am hoping it will improve!

My 14 year old border collie went deaf a couple years ago. It was an adjustment to basically relearn commands as hand motions instead of words. But he’s so smart, he caught on pretty quickly. I also like to still talk to him but now I do it with my mouth pressed on top of his head so he can feel me talking to him.

Your communication with her is so amazing! I have a deaf Dalmatian and I train deaf dogs too. Milka has OCD too and I’ve seen so many deaf dogs with separation anxiety. I never found any research that confirms this, but I always thought that it was related with deafness. Thank you for inspiring us all! 😍

We had a deaf border collie that passed away in December. I don't think most people comprehend how difficult it is. She definitely learned to watch us for signals but we spent a lot of time making sure where she was because you can't just call them to come.
