Funny. I remember doing a tv show about the importance of the news media and the absolutely vital need to fix how it was being delivered and having that show be met with a resounding howl of hipstery pearl-clutching and how-dare-you-ism and critical lambasting. Funny.

...so when you talk ask what makes us the greatest country in the world, I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about?! Yosemite?! We sure used to be. We stood up for what was right! We fought for moral reasons, we passed and struck down laws for moral reasons. We waged wars on poverty, not poor people. We sacrificed, we cared about our neighbors, we put our money where our mouths were, and we never beat out chest. We built great things, made ungodly technological advances, explored the universe, cured diseases, and cultivated the world’s greatest artists and the world’s great economy, We reached for the stars, and we acted like men. We aspired to intelligence; we didn’t belittle it; it didn’t make us feel inferior. We didn’t identify ourselves by who we voted for in the last election, and we didn’t scare so easily. And we were able to be all these things and do all these things because we were informed. By great men, men who were revered. The first step in solving the problem is recognizing there is one — America is not the greatest country in the world anymore. “
❤️❤️❤️
But it can be.

I love that show and binge watched it while completing Aaron Sorkin’s Masterclass on Screenwriting. The Newsroom was brilliantly written, beautifully acted, and was produced in a far too intelligent way for it to ever have succeeded in the current zeitgeist.

Oh. I miss that show. So much. It was like watching my frustration with the world be eloquently voiced and made sense of that had previously existed inside my scattered brain. Every episode was me saying “yes” out loud to the screen.

I still miss that show! It had me from Will McAvoy’s rant in the first episode. And the episode I’ll Try To Fix You was just resplendent. I tear up every damn time I watch it.

When I feel disappointed with the world, I rewatch The Newsroom to remind myself that we can do better. We are fricking Don Quixote, in a mission to civilize god damnit!
