Or even just a day of going to the store. And yet... it is. It IS this way and we just accept it. It IS this way because we believe the lies we’ve been told that “it just can’t be fixed”; “they’re coming for our guns”; “more guns mean more safety and good guys with guns!”; “teachers with guns will fix it!”; “But how do I protect my home?!” Well, Guess what: All we’ve managed to do is rack up a higher body count of innocent men, women and children who I’m sure, had hoped that their death wouldn’t be in vain. They hoped that maybe theirs would be the last death which needed to happen before we actually did something different. But no. We have basically said, “Thanks for your sacrifice, but it’s not enough.” We have failed. We have failed ourselves, our country and our children. We have become a nation more known for mass shootings and white supremacists than innovation and global leadership. What a waste of their lives to die in such a tragic way, while we just continue to march right on by. While part of me wants to stay home, curl up in bed and stick my head in the sand, I cannot. I refuse. I will take my daughter out tonight and remind her that the world is not all fear and hatred. I will hold her hand and tell her that she is safe. Even if I don’t know how much I believe it somedays. Why do we accept this as normal in this country? I just don’t understand.
I’m getting ready to take my daughter to the US Women’s Soccer game, and the thought that always crosses my mind now is, “I hope no one shoots up this (concert, stadium, grocery store, food festival, school, church, fill-in-the-blank public space)
That shouldn’t be one of the top 3 things any of us think about when we’re getting ready to leave the house with our families for a day of fun. Or even just a day of going to the store.
