When we left the NICU with our three week old son we were told by the neurologist 3 things:
1.Don’t google his diagnoses
2. Come back in 6 months
3. Don’t expect much from him.
I can tell you we ignored all three.
1. We were to find out later he had been misdiagnosed, twice.
2. No way in hell were we going back to that specific neurologist.
3. We have been tireless in our belief in our little boy and tireless in understanding we need to find doctors & specialists who think out of the box & are not limiting in their beliefs in the immense potential within all of us.
After reading #normandoidge ‘s incredible book #thebrainswayofhealing : we started #anatbanielmethod this week & although incredibly subtle, the entire ethos behind the method is one that resonates so highly in my bones: When asked by parents what to expect from their child with “special needs”, Anat Baniel answered, “you should expect miracles”. Sending so much love & support to all the families out there who have experienced people & institutions giving up on their kids. #fightlikehell

The approach to parents from pediatricians at birth with special needs children also needs to come from a different perspective...not one of ‘doom and gloom...I’m so sorry to inform you...’!!! But from the perspective of...’you have been gifted a special child’....it would be a game changer!!! We have so much to understand and change in regards to this. Bravo mama for not settling...for forging forward for your beautiful child! He was gifted to you for a reason ❣️To your beautiful, amazing, loving family...you will all be blessed by him and he by you! Sending you so much love...I don’t know you but I am a huge fan of your family...and I know you function out of LOVE...❣️

As a special needs practitioner of 20 years working in primary schools I can totally and whole heartily agree with you comments! All Children including ones with special needs are an open book not a closed one! If u place restrictions and low expectations on any of them they will never meet there true potential! Xx

As an Early years teacher, privileged to have taught many children who were prem babies, they can and do succeed. I have great expectations for all the wonderful children I teach. Reach for the stars, touch the moon. Grasp every opportunity. They and their parents inspire me everyday, as do your posts.

My niece ‘s daughter was born with Downs Syndrome and she advocates for her every day. Parents who fight for their children are warriors. Keep fighting for your son and he will continue to amaze you. BTW have you read “Far From The Tree” by Andrew Solomon? Hugely inspiring.

I'll read it as totally agree with this philosophy. And I've seen the powers of positivity first hand over my 20 years in NICU with parents returning with their little miracles to visit us! Great parenting Mickey. ❤ you and wish I could see more of our darling Akira 😍😘
