Because of telescopes we have: cell phones and the internet, weather satellites (and all satellites, actually), better tsunami warning systems, NASA’s DART program (and other programs that are the only way we can see celestial objects well enough in advance to stop mass extinction events), much safer air travel technologies, a variety of medical technologies, massive advancements in optics, the knowledge that we’re a heliocentric system (which has spawned numerous critical advancements), better microscopes, GPS, vastly improved ocean navigation technologies, maps, and so many other technologies, all of which have combined to save countless lives, and advance our understanding of the world we live on, in myriad ways that would not be possible otherwise.
Don’t you think it wise to support the Hawaiian people on how to take ownership of such an amazing opportunity to host these observatories and integrate them into the culture @jackjohnson ? After all, it was the stars that lead Tahitians to Hawaii in the first place.
Telescopes don’t desecrate Hawaiian culture so much as augment and compliment it.
Even more profoundly, these mountains make it possible for Hawaiians to not only be stewards of the Mauna and all Hawaii but of the entire Earth and everything living on it. That’s quite a responsibility and a tremendous honor, one that elevates Hawaiians from a subjugated class to one of the most important peoples in our fragile world.
I implore the Hawaiian people to take up this mantle and embrace it for the significance it represents and bestows. This is your moment to shine light not just deeper into the universe but across the whole of the Earth🙏🏼

"Mahalo to everyone at Mauna Kea for welcoming us to come and play songs for the kūpuna. Young people speaking and singing in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, workshops on nonviolence and Kapu Aloha at the Puʻuhuluhulu University, and the strong sense of community were truly inspiring." Aloha, Jack

Protect mauna kea at the same time protect illegal immigrants on the mainland? Sounds like something a hypocritical celebrity would say. Oh wait.
