#OnThisDate ‘John Barleycorn Must Die’ was released in 1970. “Most of the Traffic stuff stands the test of time pretty well. All of those albums are like my children, so I really can’t pick a favourite, but in many ways, John Barleycorn is the core of what Traffic is, and it could be the most definitive album we did.” - SW

Those were the days of radio and cassette tape recorders. I remember hearing "John Barleycorn..." as a young teen in Calcutta, India, on the radio probably around 1972 or so. Loved it. Thought the references to brewing of beer were VERY clever. I'd just started playing guitar around then, so feverishly picked up the lyrics off the radio....(with some misheard lyrics too, doubtless 😂) and worked out the chords best I could.... and played and sang this song a lot all the way thru the '70s in school and college.

In 1970 I remember buying not only this record, my first and only Comaro, meeting the first girl I thought I loved, also in December of 1970 I went into the Marine Corps. It was the best and worst time all mixed together.

I discovered this album way after it was released, but it opened my eyes and ears to all Steve and Traffic had done and all he and Jim would do after. This album absolutely changed my life. Thank you!

Classic. Saw you in Santa Rosa California two years ago. Fantastic show. I’d love it if you and EC went on tour since I missed you last time. Keep playing Stevie!!

A classic album. Stevie Winwood was in his prime with his beautiful voice. Jim Capaldi was great. They were all fantastic musicians creating a unique sound. Hi
