Clint Eastwood has been one of my heroes for a long time. His films, both as a director and actor, are an enormous influence. Unforgiven is a cinematic lynchpin for me, a movie that blew my mind the first time I saw it and has continued to do so every one of the 25 or so times I’ve seen it since - but his influence as a director goes all the way back to his debut with Play Misty for Me. That’s not even to mention his work as an actor with Sergio Leone and Don Siegel, two other directors I adore, and his work in gems like In the Line of Fire, Magnum Force, and Where Eagles Dare. Hell - I even, somewhat embarrassingly, know all the words to all the songs in Paint Your Wagon. So when The Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran and I got the opportunity to hang out with Clint on the set of his new film, The Ballad of Richard Jewell, I was nervous. After all, they say never meet your heroes. But in person, Clint was kind and easy to talk to. And we got to talk a lot - about his directing style, his new movie, the movies he’s made previously, and more. Clint has a Buddha-like serenity in the middle of the madness of filmmaking, and I got to watch him take charge of an enormous set with a quiet authority - soft words that ripple giant waves. He showed his crew the kindness, loyalty and respect they deserved (and they love him for it in return.) In short, he was just the kind of guy I’d hope he’d be (also, the movie looks amazing and Paul Walter Hauser - @pwhauser - as Richard Jewell is killing it.) So as far as the whole “don’t meet your heroes” thing goes, my experience is 8 out of 10 times you SHOULD. Thanks for inviting us into your home, Clint! I’ll try and take a little bit of that serenity as I walk into the explosions and falling structures of The Suicide Squad.

Having the Opportunity to work on this with one of the #GreatestLivingLegendsOfAllTime is something that I will Never forget. It was just #surreal that first time I worked on set; earlier shoot in July, to see Mr. Eastwood walking around on Set checking the scenes, how it was set up and how much Awe he Inspired from everyone on set as he'd walk by. I can't wait to see what the finished film will look like especially the Centennial Olympic Park scene which I Absolutely Loved being part of. Pretty sure I saw you around set that night too which was #PrettyEpicAsWell @jamesgunn

Was such a pleasure to play a small part in the large scenes for the week (in between the flash floods). And you hit the nail; when you said how Clint has a Buddha-like presence. That’s exactly the vibe he radiates. But yet at the same time, knocking out scene after scene and making it look effortless. The whole crew was really incredible. All very focused and humble. Experience I will never forget.

Unforgiven is one of my go to DVDs when I’m home alone and can watch what I want. Amazing movie.
Loved Million Dollar Baby too ........ oh heck I love just about everything Eastwood has acted in or directed 😊 The Good the Bad and the Ugly has to be one of my all time faves.
You, Mr Gunn, are one hell of a director too, much admiration for your work 💕

I lucked into a very small speaking role on J Edgar and got to spend a day around him on set and it was one of my favorite, most surreal days ever. Glad you got to meet your hero. You’re a lot of peoples hero, so never forget how important the work you do is. Keep up the great work!

I'd love to meet him. I grew up watching his movies and very much enjoy the movies he continues to make. He's one of very few actors who I've never seen in a bad movie, never mind the outstanding ones he's made as a director.

I froze up a bit when I met George Lucas. I had no idea what to say to someone who had such an indirect effect on my childhood. Thankfully he was one of the most chilled people on set.
