Here’s a thought:
Why not allow native Hawaiian artists to put their stamp on these observatories by covering them in traditional art that pays homage to their culture, history, and beliefs?
By analogy, the Iolani Palace is clearly in an architectural style that is Western but they modified it by adding elements that are evocative of Hawaiian culture and structures.
The ukulele is derived from Europe but is distinctly Hawaiian in voice and association. Hawaiians also use Western guitars (lap steel, Weissenborn and others) to create uniquely Hawaiian tunings and compositions unlike anything anywhere else.
Similarly, it would be a beautiful sight to see the observatories receive a full Hawaiian dressing that distinguishes them as uniquely Hawaiian in appearance and reverence.
No matter the project, I do feel that the styling needs to be be imbued with uniquely Hawaiian elements and references and that native Hawaiians have considerable input. Anything built in Hawaii should absolutely compliment the land and culture. I think of places like Sedona, Az and Santa Fe, NM as good examples of how the structures conform to the environment instead of contrasting too sharply with it.

Its not like they’re building a golf course. I know a lot of Hawaiians that work at these observatories and love it. Rad tech jobs helping study the formation of suns, planets, black holes, the origin of the Universe and life. Bad ass shit! There’s a lot of Hawaiian support for astronomy that gets no voice in the stupid media that just wants to stoke negative emotions. Let the astronomers do their mind-blowing work and go protest the islands’ meth problem. Anyways, my 2 cents. Love and good vibes. Dig your stuff JOB!

Hearing a lot about the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy but not so much about Kamehameha invading Oahu and slaughtering everyone in his path , with the help of guns provided by his haoles, piling bones at the bottom of the Pali, stealing the land from Oahu alii and giving it to his supporters. Selective memories ? History is complicated especially when you stop reading and post on Instagram every day.

Id rather have a tiny telescope that can make great discoveries about our universe and possibly help save us from an asteroid impact, then some sacred dirt

Im for the telescope and science done properly. It’s a unique location and a great opportunity for learning.

Just got back from Oahu, the locals had to explain why all the Hawaiian flags were upside-down.
