The ‘mourning purple’ silk corset first appeared in the Dante show in 1996. A fine appliqué of chantilly lace and jet bead embroidery, this corset was specially made by corset maker Mr. Pearl. Lee McQueen defined its distinctive silhouette and cut its neckline, whilst the jet embroidered beads were taken from a vintage Victorian skirt and applied by hand in the London studio. Its embroidered elements were referenced and encrusted into the Mourning Suit, currently on display at our London flagship, 27 Old Bond Street.

Unlocking Stories is open to the public and provides complete access to the processes, stories, teamwork and materials that went into select looks from the Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2019 collection. From the treasury of ideas and clothes by Lee Alexander McQueen through to the inspiration and creative processes developed organically by Sarah Burton in the studio today.

And then a few years later made it into his studio as an intern and finally watched my hero work in person. He changed the direction of my life and I am forever grateful and remain so heartbroken he is gone. Truly the greatest designer ever....
