I wanted to share something personal with you so here we go - My job requires me to work under pressure most of the time. At one point a few years ago - I took on too much (this is my fault really 🙊) , and found myself in a very bad place. It took a toll on my physical and mental health, and it was affecting my relationships and work. I had anxiety attacks before taking the stage and I’d just sit in my car, angry with myself. This had to stop.

I took an effort to see the right people to get back on track, learn how to manage anxiety, and how important it is to give yourself room to breathe (which was tough, being the workaholic that I am 🤣)
.
That’s just my experience with mental health. I’m lucky to have had solid family and friends who helped to pull me through this dark period. I got my spark back and felt better than ever.

Some sobering stats: 18% of youths in SG suffer from depression and 75% of mental illnesses happen before the age of 24. I hope that in the near future, mental issues will not be seen as a social taboo, and we as a society will show more love and empathy.

Start from school, make it mandatory for everyone to normalize it. It’s like sex ed - even if people laugh abt it or brush it off, at least everyone takes a thing or two away from it. Maybe it will all make sense down the road when people have personal encounters, or have loved ones suffer from it. So many lives can be saved if the stigma is removed!! Thank you Sonia for bringing this up, especially with your influence. It’s a conversation more people should have!!!

Thanks for sharing. I was shocked and heartbroken to read the figures released by SOS on youth suicide today. We need to tell our youth - and in fact everyone else - it’s ok *not* to be ok. There are some companies (I think in the UK) who have mental health days which I think is a good step forward. At the place where I work, we talk about psychological safety which is also related to mental health in some ways. @soniachew

To be honest. See the person talent's and encourage him or her, grades aren't one that defines life success . The most important thing is not to constantly compare and political compete. Being truly yourself matters. And it dosent start from school. It starts from the family. So to the parents, don't put uncessarily stress on the next generation just because you failed to achieve in your time. @soniachew

the worse thing about having mental disorder is the social stigma, the views and pressures that's making it even harder for the person having it to have the right environment that they could feel safe to recover. its an disorder that could have been better handled if the society doesn't feel it as a problem rather than an opportunity to come together and work towards a better goal

It takes massive courage to share something so personal. I'm so glad you seek help during those dark times. I'm sure with this post, many will realised that they are not alone and will do something about it. Sending you humongous love. In conclusion, anything that starts with an S and ends with an A is definitely awesome! ❤️❤️❤️
