“Love Your Brain, Love Your Life”
.
I recently came across a video by Dr. Daniel Amen who gave this quote while talking about mental health. I was so struck by these words and really reflected on them.
.
Pictured are two girls. And I LOVE both of them. The difference is, the girl on the left didn’t trust herself. Tried to cover herself up with a mask of makeup and that terrible flower crown. Feared what people thought about her. Didn’t know who she was. Tried to be what other people wanted. Was afraid to look up! And ultimately it reflected on her outward appearance.
The girl on the right decided to embrace herself. Accepted her insecurities. Loved her acne! Doesn’t wear makeup 90% of the time. Opened up. Took charge of her life and her identity. Blocked out the bullies and the critics who don’t know her. Tries everyday to love herself and know her worth!!
.
Maybe some of you thought this was only a ‘body positivity’ post (which it is too) but more importantly it’s a BRAIN POSITIVITY post. It’s crazy how much effort and care we put into our physical bodies to keep them healthy and working... but why don’t we put that same effort into our brain?! And our mental health?!
.
Anyways, I’m grateful for both women pictured. Grateful for all that I’ve gone through. And I’M PROUD OF HOW FAR I’VE COME! And how HARD I’ve worked on both my physical and mental health! 🖤

Hi Jenna, I am one of your biggest fans! 😊 I don’t usually bother famous people, but I have to say something. I think you're beautiful in both pics. Excuse me but...F*ck All These Body Shaming Ass People!
Ok back to what matters. I totally understand your post. You should be PROUD! When you smile it warms my heart and when I see you smile with Val, I know he's got you. 😊 We all have some type of mental heath issues, some are more extreme than others. When we have loving, caring and patient people around us the more your brain becomes stronger.
Since your first audition on SYTYCD to winning your first mirror ball with Adam, I've seen you become stronger, more confident, and more visible. I've always hid in the shadows growing up, with no self confidence, no self esteem and being "different". I have been on my own since the age of 19, I was kicked out of my home because I was gay. Imagine what that did to my mental health, my brain...I had nothing, nobody, didn't no my worth and always asked myself what's my purpose.
Like you, I took charge and started to be proud of who I was, surrounded myself with good people. I felt alive, strong and loved. I am 54 now, have met the love of my life who gives me so much joy in my life. She stimulates my brain, keeps me on track, and gives me stability.
You are a bright light that shines for all to see. Don’t ever stop shining! You are that beautiful star the next generation and the future one’s to come, can look up to and shine bright as you. Always be true to yourself. Positivity gives you Strength, Strength gives you Confidence, Confidence brings you Joy, Joy brings you Happiness, Happiness brings you Love and Love brings you Peace. Never Change for anyone, you are who you are meant to be. ❤ Much Love. ✌🏾

I love the majority of this message and am so happy you’re in a good place taking care of your brain, BUT you are totally missing the mark on what body positivity is about. Even though you didn’t clearly say it, a before/after comparison implies something is wrong with the before picture (one that is clearly a higher weight than the other) Body positivity is about not comparing, and is about embracing bodies of all sizes, whether they move for exercise or not. You have a lot of influence on your followers and I saw several comments asking about your weight loss, which means people are somehow getting a message saying body positivity is about losing the weight (even if those weren’t your words). Caring for a body doesn’t equate to making it smaller- Diet culture tells us that false message enough already, literally everywhere, every single day. I encourage you to look more into body liberation and health at every size movements! Again, I do love your message about caring for your mental health - it’s the most important thing!?

I’m sorry but this sends a very sad message to young women. Your message reads “ the one on the left tried to cover herself up”. Why? Are you saying you were fat? This post is nothing about mental health. It’s mental illness and what Hollywood does to women. The need to be anorexic and have no body fat. You are beautiful but your body looks ill in the right photo. The left photo is an average woman and what we should be celebrating. In no way should we ever let our bodies get dysmorphia. To look in the mirror and think that that left photo is one that should be hidden? What are you a size 5 there? Please don’t do this to young women ever again. It’s abuse. We need to be role models for them !!! 👏👏

I am so confused about this post. First, I think you were fine before and a little thin now. If it wasn’t about body.. then why post the comparison? I love you to death Jenna... you have always been my favorite troupe dancer before you become a lead. I think you have some dysmorphia.. Because you say mental but post the photos in conjunction with trying to make an argument about mental health while trying to make sense of the photo. Maybe it’s the pressure of Hollywood and fame that is doing this? Fame does change you...maybe mental health is stepping away from the limelight. It’s changed you I think... but you will always be my favorite dancer.

Oh my goodness!! @dance10jenna This is exactly why people should never, ever judge! Girl.. you’re amazing and beautiful! I’ve loved you since SYTYCD days! Thought you were one of the best .. beautiful and Fierce .. I never saw those insecurities you describe 😍 even tho I don’t know you, I think you set a great example to our girls out here watching you! My granddaughter included. It’s so important for us girls to build each other up, not to tear down. I sure hope you see your beauty in the pic on the left, I sure do! Keep on, keepin on!

Beauty comes from within! My daughter has followed you for a long time and your a tremendous dancer! We understand the demands of staying in shape. But I have to honestly say you were beautiful on the left already and for whatever reason, sadly you didn’t believe that. I think you went to far with your weight loss. A lot of young girls/women follow you and look up to you and I think it’s setting the wrong expectations regarding their outwardly appearance. Being wafer thin does not equate to be healthy!
