Today, we are looking at the Beastie Boys's classic album Paul's Boutique for #JuxtapozSoundandVision not only because the album was released 30 years ago today, July 25, 1989, but because we can't believe we haven't included them in this section yet. (And make sure you see the Beastie Boys installation at @beyondthestreetsart this summer.) Paul's Boutique is such a landmark album, not just for the Beasties but where it stands in the history of music-making. Teaming with the Dust Brothers, over 100 songs were sampled and layered into a dense collage of eras, sounds and moods. It changed the way artists, and the music industry, treated sampling. We could talk for years about Paul's Boutique as a groundbreaking production, influencing everything from DJ Shadow to the cut n'paste aesthetic of the Avalanches and J Dilla. But it also remains an outlier not only in the Beastie's catalog but the entirety of music. It's just Paul's Boutique, all its own original sound and vision. •
In June 2013, Juxtapoz's @joeyjoeygarfield sat down with #AdRock from the Beastie Boys to discuss each album cover in their canon in our special Beastie Boys issue. Here's what he said about Paul's Boutique, shot on the corner of Rivington and Ludow in Manhattan: •
"Yauch's nickname was The Techno-Wiz because he would come up with all these crazy ideas. He said, 'I heard about a camera that shoots these 360-degree photographs,' and I thought it would be cool to go down to the LES and just stand  in the street and have this full gatefold with a cool view of the city. We did some on the roof, too, in the middle of the city where you can see everything, but I haven't seen those since. I love this album cover. Jeremy Shatan helped Yauch shoot it. Even if this were from another band, I would love this album cover. We dressed up the store and put Al Green, Modern Lovers and our stuff in the photo. That's my Mets shirt and my albums. We brought all that shit. That's my banjo. Yauch, Mike and I are in the picture, and also our friend, Dave Scilken. And Ricky's (Powell) pool photo is on the inside sleeve. I like that I had a dashiki on. It was the late 80s,. a risk-taking time in fashion.”

kraphty @noiseuntilnothing I love “Since I left You” but my point was not who has the most samples, it was how the production game changed because of those 2 albums. The Avalanches most certainly had to pay royalties or get permission for all those samples as a result of the lawsuits incurred following PB and 3ft H & R. My point was this, the impact these two albums had with all those samples, not just all the samples.

noiseuntilnothing @kraphty “most samples in album history” but yes I totally get it. De La and PB were the premier mainstream plunderphonic sampling records and never really cut the crop underground until Shadow and Avalanches! It is quite phenomenal how after PB and 3FAR the legality around sampling was noticed as flawed and then processed into another money making scheme for the industry

jasonsandoval3804 This was the beginning of their re-birth that would make them the creative geniuses they would become with the help from the Dust Brothers. License To Ill was the joke that became the albatrosses around their necks. I’m sure it was fun for a little while but they needed to get away and reinvent themselves for their own sakes. Ground breaking. Mind blowing. Brilliant. ✊👏

gunn_surfboards Paul’s was 20 years ahead of its time. Everyone expected more “Fight for your right” with the Beasties sophomore effort. No one knew what to make of PB. People didn’t understand and it snd the world was not ready for it. Amazing record then. Even more amazing now.

noiseuntilnothing @kraphty entroducing has more samples than De La, less than Paul’s, but above all the Avalanches Since I Left You is the winner of most samples on a record with a number clocking in at over a thousand

laalcachofablanca This album blew my mind when I was a wee lad. I must have heard it around '94, and it is still easily one of my all time favorites. This is awesome!
