Let's talk about fear periods. 👻
When Phoebe came to us, she was timid, sound sensitive and scared of unfamiliar things. I knew I needed to get her socialized right away. Before she was fully vaccinated, I took her to safe places every day and rewarded her with food for each interaction. She was doing so much better.
Then, she hit a different phase of fear period. Suddenly, people and other dogs were super scary to her. Not all dogs go through these stages but it's pretty common for puppies to be cautious as they discover the world. It is part of their survival instinct. One scary incident can imprint in puppy's brain and she might always be cautious of the things that are associated with the incident. So it's extremely important to expose/socialize the puppy to different things and provide positive associations using things she likes--food, toys, affection, etc.
Phoebe started barking and lunging at the construction workers in our yard. She wasn't being aggressive. It was 100% fear. Instead of keeping Phoebe inside while men are in the yard, I used them to work with her. Every hour or so, I took her out in the yard and did "Look at that" training--I keep her where she's comfortable enough and reward her every time she looks over to the workers direction. Look-“Yes!”-Treat-Repeat. She started making a more positive association. I gradually decreased the distance daily and I did this for three weeks straight. I remember doing this same training with Jazzy when she was a puppy. I also take Phoebe to the stores that allow dogs, restaurants, every car ride to drop my kids off, and I take her to a dog park in the morning. We only go to the small side as the big side is too rowdy and that would definitely traumatize my girls. It's been three weeks and I see a huge improvement in Phoebe. She approaches strangers and her half tail wags constantly. She still has a ways to go but I feel much more hopeful that she will end up becoming a confident dog in the near future.
If your pup/dog is going through this, don't give up. Keep working with them positively and patiently. And celebrate the baby steps! Happy training!

Dante was a pretty sensitive pup as well- noticed things and noises. He wasn’t overly fearful or timid, but I think he could’ve been that way very easily. One thing I noticed was that he had many many fear periods. I actually noticed he had them when he was going through a big growth spurt. He’s now 2 years old and doesn’t have any fear issues.
Aside from bringing treats with me everywhere, the other thing I learned to help Dante work through his fear was playing with him- wrestling, playing tug, whatever he found fun. Even more than food, play is such a great way to change their emotional state. I know you already know a ton of dog training stuff, but in case you don’t know it yet, Fenzi dog sports academy is amazing and has wonderful online training classes- like a ‘play’ class and an engagement class, including tons of others

I just got my new girl on Saturday and we’re working daily on positive socialization. I’m so excited to be working with her and starting our puppy training. However, at 8 weeks old, I have to remind myself that she still needs lots and lots of sleep!! Balance is key. So between seeing new things, meeting new people and animals, I try to make sure she gets plenty of time to rest. Overstimulation can have negative impacts, for anyone who might me socializing their pup and seeing fearful behavior or aggression popup, keep this in mind!

Well done for persisting with PB, she’s an awesome little pup!
My Border Collie who is going to be 10 years old in October is very anxious and is a constant work in progress! She develops phobias daily so each day we deal with whatever is bothering her and I use her ball to distract/reward her and so far it has worked well (for her the ball works better than using treats as she is obsessed with her ball) She’s high maintenance but definitely worth the daily challenges ?

Thaanks for this. My girl I have right now came to me after being beat up by her littermates. She was the runt by far. I tried to socialize her. She was okay for awhile and then she got worse. I totally did it wrong and now I have a dog afraid of people and other dogs. It’s very frustrating. I tried taking her to the park and staying on the edges but kids kept sneaking over and wanting to play with her which didn’t help. I haven’t tried it again. Maybe I will.

@bordernerd great! She’s 3 now, and does have a tiny bit of residual fear period behavior- v rarely she’ll bark at ppl that are v far away (she did this heavily from 9-12 mo when we would hike), or rarely will bark at someone who’s standing v still. Also a behavior that was v present in those fear periods. It’s v rare now.
