I’ve had the honor of meeting and talking with astronauts for the last couple of weeks and one of them contextualized the level of professionalism, focus and attention to detail that comes with every mission by telling the story of Armstrong. He went down the ladder of the LEM, stepped off, spoke those famous words and after a small beat began reporting back every single significant detail. The depth of the powder, the firmness, started placing cameras, etc. It’s this immediate pivot to the specific details that really makes these guys heroes. That in the most extraordinary circumstances they could remain calm and do the work they were trained to do with absolute calm and precision. I am and always will be in awe of what we are capable of when we put our minds, talent and energy towards a goal. Hopefully the next 50 years will see us taking on more tasks that today would be unfathomable.

chlochlo_rama Couldn’t agree more @halfadams this week here in the UK I watched a documentary marking 50 years since the Apollo 11 landings. It was fascinating and now that I’m older I truly appreciate the magnitude of this event (plus realising that 50 years is not such a long time ago in the grand scheme of things- having been born in the 80’s this event didn’t occur too many year before I was born , whereas when you’re a kid time feels so different! 🤣)

joshwhitlam @halfadams apparently Armstrong’s heart rate barely exceeded 100 bpm during the lunar liftoff - having already had to manually land the thing after a failed automation landing. Solid as a rock.

meranne2006 Beautifully put! It always amazes me thinking of the courage it took (of the people on the ground and in the sky), to think these missions could even be possible!!
