Over the past two months I’ve watched a family of Eastern Phoebes attempt to start their family on the blade of our patio fan. Today I wrote about what bird watching has taught me about life (link above and in stories- with a video of the baby eating!) over at DS. Watching this little bird family lay over 7 eggs in two clutches and only have one hatch successfully has been such a life lesson in hope, loss, and awe. #birdwatchers 🐣 (Don’t worry, all photos and videos were taken from much further back and zoomed in super close. I follow all the nest watching guidelines from the Cornell Bird Watch program 👍🏽)

I have an aunt and uncle with a house on the Florida coast. They built a platform with a webcam for osprey to nest on and, to their surprise, eagles moved in. We all watched the webcam avidly, and they were so, so attentive, but sadly none of the eggs hatched - perhaps because they were a very young pair. I happened to be at the house for a week that was two or three after the eggs had been due to hatch. One night just before sunset, I watched her leave the nest and swoop in large, wide circles around it for probably 30-40 minutes. Then she flew away and never came back. Honestly, it was chance that I happened to be on the back porch when it happened, and I feel like I was privy to something that I might not have even believed if I hadn’t seen it. I will never in my life forget it.

We watched as a robin sat and sat for days on end. Finally laying 3 eggs. We heard them so early in the morning for days tweeting, since they were just outside of our bedroom window. Then we spotted the 3 babies, mouths permanently agape waiting for the endless feedings. It was wonderful. Then one morning we heard nothing and looked out and no sign of any of the babies or big momma. From one day to the next they were gone. There were no Jays or predators nearby, we can’t imagine if the all fledged at once or what. Just odd and sad, cause we missed them.

We have them every year in CT right over our door. Usually a cow bird ruins it for several clutches, but this year they laid 9 (in 2 clutches) and they all seemed to live (not sure if any died after they left the nest but I see at least 3-4 around the yard practicing flying & hunting). They’re a joy to have in the yard, watching them hunt bugs is the best. Such excitement when I see them return in early April.

We have black phoebes that nest on the eves just outside our girls bedroom. They make mud nests and poop so so much on our windowsills so it is pretty messy. But watching the babies fledge was so awesome. We’ve also had hummingbirds nest in our passion fruit vines above our patio just over our couch. It is kind of amazing how close to humans birds are willing to nest.

Totally have been thinking the same thing lately. Living on our little lake has been such a huge lesson on the beauty & harshness of Mother Nature. Every year I watch several mommy ducks lay their brood of eggs and then slowly the count of little ducklings dwindles down to one or zero 😭 We have lots of hawks, owls and raccoons...

I am sorry 😘I am a bird watcher from my deck and have adored inviting their beauty into my life. I have about 10 different species whom are my guest. I do all I can to provide a home, food, water. I am saddened to see several over the years don’t make it out safely. Thank you too for being compassion to nature.
