Since returning to light workouts #postpartum, I have had a lot of questions from the #BBGCommunity around abdominal separation (Diastis Recti or DR). As a personal trainer, I can only speak to my PERSONAL experience. Not only have I worked very closely with my doctor and physiotherapist, I have also been very cautious and made sure I feel safe and comfortable when completing any exercises. Clearance for training, especially in relation to DR should only ever come from your healthcare professionals. A personal trainer can NOT clear you for training!!
From what I understand and my experience working with women, some women get NO abdominal separation at all. For others, their ab muscles can separate and never fully come back together, every woman's experience is individual and unique. During pregnancy, I had a four finger width of separation in my abdominals (place four fingers over your belly button and THAT is how much my abs separated😱). At my last check up, I was down to ONE finger around my belly button and since then it has been a slow process to recovery for me, focused on REST and light workouts. If you’ve been following my journey, you’ll know that I have been completing 3 MODIFIED #BBG workouts + LISS per week. Now that I am starting to regain some of my strength postpartum, I have also started to include SOME modified #BBGStronger workouts into my routine again.
I am feeling SOOO much stronger and starting to regain my confidence but will still continue to limit my abdominal training until it is safe AND more comfortable for my body. For now my focus is on more full body and “CORE training” which means exercises like planks and leg lowers 😃.

Love that you are so open about your physiotherapy, and also your own limitations as a personal trainer! Here in the states, physical therapy (as we call it) is not something that women are often referred to after pregnancy. As a physical therapist, I feel they should be as it seems women are in other countries. Also, being in the field, it’s not hard to find personal trainers that try to over step their scope and treat more “medical” issues. Thank you for advocating PT while also drawing clear cut lines of what your scope as a trainer is! You have a huge reach and it matters!

Thank you so much for sharing this!! I'm currently 26 weeks pregnant and my doctor believes I'm starting to develop DR. It may sound silly, but I was devastated when she told me that. I honestly felt like my body was going to be ruined and that I would never be able to work out the same way again. It's so amazing to see your recovery from this same condition. It gives me so much hope! Seriously, thank you ♥️♥️♥️

I think at the beginning of the BBG program it should state that some of the exercises are not suitable if you have DR or are in the early stages of PP.
I started BBG 5 months PP , I didn’t realise my core still wasn’t strong enough and sadly I now have a small Hernia . I wish I had had a better understanding of PP recovery and wish I had followed a core rehab program before starting any other exercise .

@kayla_itsines how did you get your stomach to go completely back to flat after having a baby? I had my baby just a week or so after you had your little girl and my stomach is still not completely flat like it was pre pregnancy yet I weigh less than I did before I got pregnant. I don’t know what to do to get rid of the last little bit of a pooch on my lower stomach.

What happens if you start working out when that abdominal isn’t closed enough post partum (which I understand is one of the things they check in order to clear you..?)? My friend had surgery several years after her last baby because her abs were so separated the muscle was only coming further out, which just sounds crazy ??

PHOTOSHOP....you already have a great body, why would you feel the need to make your legs look like toothpicks?? You have an amazing platform to use to promote a healthy body image and this is the kind of stuff you’re choosing to post? And don’t come @ me with “she’s just naturally thin.”
