Yup - also, when people want to avoid conversations that are upsetting, like destroying the world, refugees in concentration camps separated from their children who are being raped and abused by stressed out patrols, that there is a psychopath in the White House, and that the whole Senate majority is okay with that, in fact it aligns with the whole let’s turn the whole work force into slaves only we won’t even give them a shack to live in, in fact we’ll make it illegal to build a shack - it’s because they lack resilience. It’s a habit thing. We all have five states: automatic, sensitive, conscious, creative and united- they just haven’t had the support to strengthen their other resource states - it’s a skill - where do we learn it? We don’t. We are told to have it. That has the opposite effect. In fact, Stanford research by Dr Carol Dweck proves it’s a pervasive issue - she calls it a fixed mindset. So that means it’s a social problem not an individual one. Social psychology confirms - the root? No sense of belonging. Which doesn’t mean you don’t have family, it means everyone is so stressed it’s not a connected tolerant growth experience. How we deal with stress varies - from shooting out your high school to becoming a stoner to road rage trolling disorderly eating and also...being greedy. We may not have the power to regulate guns at the moment or save the humans free the refugees, stop the bans - but we can come together and build resiliency and community. See, the urban public university with the most diverse first generation student population in the country, well, they figured something out. It’s a peer based critical reflection practice- fun! And its totally transportable. It’s like socioemotional yoga - getting present and reflecting in a small group - so it also broadens world views and builds the skill and attitude of empathy- shifts folks into a growth mindset - thru a guided story telling practice. How cool is that? Let’s ignite a peer based volunteer driven prosocial macrolevel community and resiliency building movement by taking San Francisco State’s critical reflection practice and spreading it through coffee shops!

@chelseahandler I loved listening to you read LWBTDOM. I can relate, sympathize and empathize. I’m also jealous of my young self and that voracious determination to be utterly independent and successful. You’re doing such good work. Be proud of yourself. ??

And if you work on yourself enough, you STILL might not understand what the struggle is for.
