#Repost w/ @aclu_socal・On this day in 1923, Upton Sinclair read the First Amendment to striking longshoremen in San Pedro, California. He had not even finished reading three lines when police arrested him.
He went on to found the ACLU of Southern California — the first affiliate modeled after the ACLU in New York, which formed three years earlier in 1920.
For 96 years, the ACLU of Southern California has remained true to Sinclair’s spirit. And we will continue to protect and advance the civil rights of Californians — for as long as it takes. ✊🏽✊🏼✊🏾
