While shooting the Northern Lights, you'll want to have a fast aperture lens like the Nikkor 14-24 F/2.8. Your ISO will need to be high if it's not terribly strong, somewhere around 1600-3200 is a great starting range. Your shutter speed will need to be long but not too long to where you get star trails, 15 seconds is my go to. If the aurora is dancing quickly you'll want a faster shutter speed to freeze the movement and not have blurry aurora.
