#TheListening, the 2002 debut by #LittleBrother is for hip hop what the self titled #NewYorkDolls 73 debut was for punk culture. What 1974’s #InspirationInformation by #ShuggieOtis was for abstract funk. What @GaryNuman’s 81 “Dance” album was for @プリンス’s Minniapolis creative assault & perhaps the entire #Sylvers MGM/Pride catelogue was for bubblegum soul. It provided context and a vision for the future very quietly. When history is written, many a revisionist will bestow #CollegeDropout w accolades and props on introducing the world to a 3 dimensional flesh and blood view of modern black struggle. Something hip hop avoided its first 2 decades. Truth is North Carolina’s Little Brother was Ye’s blueprint long before he had a deal. Drake has gone on record to sing Little Brother’s praises in how instrumental their line blurring of singing and mcing was for him. This album pioneered SoundCloud producers & blog mcs. I laughed so hard when @9thwonder told me he used something called #FruityLoops & garage band to record this entire album. “Fruit What!!!??”—-I’m not laughing no more. Until the @westsidegunn movement (we can add @Freddie Gibbs @anderson._paak & @rocmarci too) LB was truly the last hip hop movement I cared about AS A FAN w/o dissecting & listening as a peer. Peep the documentary on @okayplayer tomorrow on the making of a revolution that you don’t even know about

Thank You for providing the platform to discuss this Group, Album and it's impact on the Culture. @phontigallo @rapperbigpooh x @9thwonder definitely provuded the shot of inspiration that the south needed to provide some balance between the mainstream and the underground sonically. Much in the same way that @therealhierocrew did in the bay area. #SALUTE

@questlove Thank you for saying this! The Listening is still one of My Favorite Albums! Love Love Little Brother! I remember the day day I bought the album at a record store around the corner of my house, which of course is closed now. I told the owner I needed some new hip hop, and said check this out, you will love it! He was right!✊🏾👊🏾👏🏾👏🏾🤛🏾

YES!!! A million times yes! Little brother is probably the most underrated group ever in hip hop, they deserved to be so much bigger! I used to tell anyone who would listen how dope they are, the listening and minstrel show were classics, so good, so timeless, they both still hold up 15 plus yrs later, damn I miss them!!
