It hurts to say that this very low resolution preview image is all that’s left from possibly the most epic flight of my life while documenting the remote & harsh Island of Onekatan last night. Upon landing, gale force winds blew it off a huge cliff rendering our 3 hour rescue mission worthless. We called it off at midnight while @renan_ozturk @tedhesser & I hung from shallow tree roots with headlamps over 80ft cliffs leading to the volcanic lake below. Despite being only 30ft away from our precious memory cards from the expedition the risk wasn’t worth it. To add insult to injury the small thumbnail file was still visible on my phone so we can all appreciate this truly remote beauty. I’ve never cried from losing and image but last night I was pretty close. Onward & upward the journey continues... .

It happens to the best of us man. What’s important is that you’re safe to shoot another day... I remember losing my memory card in geothermal waters of Iceland. After hours of searching and nearly burning my hands off it’s safe to say emotions were high. For a thumbnail this so still a grand image and I’m sure if will bring back memories for ever ✌?

Too add another note to the symphony of poetic responses above, I’m sure That type of light and moment of loss will motivate you in ways the high res image might not have had the power to do. This image magnifies the power of imagination, which often doesn’t come with the perfection within photography. And that’s huge. Keep crushing.

I guess this means you’ll just have to go back for another photography journey, when the pain of losing the original subsides at least. Que sera sera, whatever will be will be! This is still a wicked cool image with an even cooler/tragic backstory though

Huge bummer for us. How fortunate you can close your eyes and revisit anytime. Great reminder to me, to live and enjoy the moment. Thank you for sharing. I love your work and admire the passion behind every shot. Most important, you chose to be safe. ?

Amen. I've had this happen to me after about six months of preproduction and thousands of dollars on a video shoot. It sucks but at least I learned a lot and I'll always have those stories to tell people about, with or without the footage.

Sounds familiar! It’s a sad moment for an shoot. We lost one on the Beni River. Our boat was right over it. We knew it was only eight feet below our feet, but we couldn’t risk the rescue. ? @hayleymstuart
