Natasha // Upstate NY | I’ve thought a lot about whether of not to post this story, but, I think it’s important. So, fuck it. Here’s the story Natasha’s Photo.
Natasha is my Godsister. I was visiting her and her family at their farm in upstate NY and one afternoon she and I were in a field, listening to music, shooting, talking and this moment happened - a young woman who was completely lost in her own world, not performing for any “gaze,” but rather, celebrating her womanhood and embracing her own power as a women.
In 2016 I posted this image on Instagram. And it was censored. I was stunned, and then outraged, especially considering some of the imagery that shows up in my feed and in the discovery section. To each their own, but naked women posing for men are fine, but this image, this needs to be censored? It felt like Instagram was telling women that their bodies are shameful, unless they are being used for the purposes of male satisfaction and that their womanhood should not be celebrated. And I reposted the image saying just that. The image was removed again and my account was immediately blacklisted and buried in the algorithm. Overnight my account became invisible. It’s been that way ever since.
Now, I have never really put a whole lot of stock in the whole Insta fame world and I don’t particularly care. However, Instagram is a publishing house now and like it or not, as a photographer a lot of my jobs come down to clients looking at my Instagram - brands will or will not hire you based on your follower count and interactions. So, I’m calling you out Instagram. I’m not the only one you’ve buried. And I’m tired of you telling me what I want to see in my timeline, because your algorithm sucks. If I follow someone, I want to see their images, not the same 5 people and nobody else. Show me my damn friends and stop making women feel like only images a frat boy would wanna jerk off to is what the beauty standard of a woman should be. ✊🏼 #girlgaze #feminist #genderequality #nastywoman #everydaysexism

That was censored? It's just tits! Ffs. But yeah, nice genes btw. Js. Also since beauty is so subjective, and I believe there's both men and women who don't look good bare and those that do, what can be done? Clothes. The entire part of the reason for public modesty and respect is based on the fact we can't avoid looking at our surroundings and thus can not avert our gaze from what we like nor what we find grotesque... We can however, respect not everybody wants to see us naked, and that's why it should be "special" and "private" to some extent. Are you really unique to anyone when it's "normal" and the world is totally desensitized to sexuality? Nobody will have desire anymore, no romance... Autonomy is the destruction of this species, I promise.

Two things here that this post addresses, both are very important. The censorship one is probably more so, yes, it's a private company and they can censor whatever they want, but they need to understand what their customers want. The above picture should not be subject to censorship under any reasonable test. There are pictures that are posted that are typically much more risque but because the subject isn't totally topless, they get posted without a problem - it's the double standard (as I see it) that is the real issue with this photo and others like it. Now, the other issue, Instagram's horrible algorithm, is a whole different kettle of fish! And I totes agree with the poster, the algorithm sucks.

Hear hear glad somebody is saying my words. Every week for the past 2 months I’ve been getting supposed models messaging me wanting me to talk with them with their half naked butt Showing in their profile pic excuse me not interested. However prior to that my story posts were spammed by these “models” that o decided to go private because I didn’t want to see this on my insta. Okay i don’t mind photos like you said in this post but anyone doing it for fame or money attention Kardash wannabes no i won’t accept. It’s ridiculous i hope ig will fix this soon

Sarah Silverman whines all the time about not being able to show her nipples. Am I missing something here? Why this need for women to be naked all the time in a public forum? I don’t understand it. I think it’s more because they want attention or compliments than anything else. Why does having your nipple on IG matter so much? Go look at yourself in a mirror naked if you need to see nipples. Go search porn. It’s not hard to find nipples if that’s really what you need in your life. ?

wow so many in this comment section didn't read the post. It isn't abt the woman in the photo - a photographer posted it (because this is her portfolio) and Instagram penalised her for it. It affects the photog's livelihood. Geez, with this level of reading comprehension it's no wonder Amanda's posts are getting this much hate. @mingey I suggest one liner posts henceforth. The mobs can't read and hold their pitchforks at the same time.
