On today’s episode of The Slow Down I’m talking about triggering. These are the tools I reach for when I’m feeling triggered.

I cannot thank you enough for sharing this information. As you mentioned, it’s so useful caring around a “tool box” to unpack when you’re feeling overwhelmed, triggered or anxious. You are so articulate and definitive when you speak, which certainly helps others when discussing these topics.
Another tip I’ve found helpful is the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 coping technique for anxiety. Basically, I try to identify 5 things I can presently see, 4 things I can touch, 3 things I can hear, 2 things I can smell and 1 thing I can taste. This works particularly well in crowded environments, or if my brain starts creating situations or conversations that I know will never happen. Hope this technique helps others!

These are such amazing ideas. My 7 year old daughter, Lucy, has struggled with anxiety and panic attacks since she was about 4-5. She saw a therapist last year who helped her tremendously and recommended the Tapping technique, only she calls it Butterfly Hugs for the kids she sees. I think that the I Spy technique will work really great with Lucy if/when she has a moment like this again. Thanks, Ingrid! This really just brought me to tears because it’s so hard to help a kid with stuff like this when they don’t know how to express what is happening and they don’t understand why this happens to them and not their friends. So very helpful!

This was so helpful thank you so much, i’ve been following you for a long time now and I am so proud of how much you have worked on yourself and how you have bloomed. I will use your tools and would like to share some of mine when it’s my friends that have a panic attack or a trigger I some time start inventing a story, it makes them think of something else and helps for some people or another thing I do and I do this for myself is doing jumping jacks it bings up my heart beat and like you say uses another part of my brain for the coordination. Thank you! Love you!

Thank you for this! I'm hearing a lot of people in YouTube videos at the moment say "triggered!" and then moving on. Which is cool because it's something we're starting to talk more about. But I like that you're explaining what it means to you to be triggered without actually going into personal details about it. Well done! And I recognise that feeling of "Why did this pop up in my head right now?!!" ?☺️

Loved this!!! I suffered from multiple panic attacks last year and it caused triggers for me afterwards in being afraid of the attacks happening again. I had to do a lot of work on myself and seek help and learned many techniques, including the ones mentioned in this video, to help myself. I am a 4th grade teacher and I now pass this info on to my students.?

I struggle with this ALL of the time and I’ve never thought of it as being “triggered” but that term makes a lot of sense with the feelings that that brings. I often also will just randomly have thoughts that make me feel all anxious and trapped like you were describing as the past or future. Thank you for the tools you mentioned ♥️♥️
