If it wasn’t for MoMA’s “International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design” in 1948, the Eames Shell Chair might never have come to fruition. Drawing inspiration and insight from Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen’s award-winning work and their own exploration of molded plywood, the Eameses designed a stamped-metal prototype of a side chair. It was promising enough to share the second-place prize in the “Seating Units” category of the competition, but Charles and Ray quickly saw that it would be too expensive to produce. So they abandoned metal in favor of a fiberglass-reinforced plastic—a material first developed by the US Army during World War II. This affordable, durable, and lightweight alternative was the very material from which the first Eames Shell Chair was made in 1950. rolandsh1000 Inside baseball: George Nelson takes credit for introducing the Eames’ to the new fiberglass material, and even stated that Charles got mad at George for saying it (Charles held that he came to the material independently)
