caption: The MTA is slow and expensive and broken, and fixing it isn't a sexy job. So who's going to do it? I have three experts on my podcast this week with big ideas on the future of transportation in NYC and I give them a few ideas of my own. Listen at the link in bio

Here on holiday for a few days, it’s jolly hot down there, but I don’t think even you can do much about that @alecbaldwininsta ?? One thing we have noticed, is the lack of signage, especially compared to the London Underground. We know our way around (we have been visiting the city since the early 80s). But if you are new, or unsure, there really isn’t much to tell you even which direction you are travelling. Also, you don’t get the little line maps on the trains, like you do on the Tube. I could come in and bought you to death on your podcast and chat to you about the Tube, I remember when there was smoking carriages, that was fairly horrible ?

Thank you for this. My neighborhood, which almost exclusively must use the A & 1 train, has our own group in FB #uptownsubwayadvocates . We help each other out by posting ASAP issues with the MTA in real time, often more accurately than the MTA. We are not only dealing with poorly run and massive loss of access to the subways at night and on the weekend due to repair work, but also elevator repair work which will impact the infirmed, elderly and children in strollers for a whole year. Please address those issues as well @alecbaldwininsta

Why wasn’t this being constantly upgraded. My 2nd av F train stop for thirty years smells like a urinal —And where’s all the money the MTA that should have for decades been upgrading us to world class commuting stature? Give me a break! Instead we are all STILL shlepping through filthy delayed transport systems. Letting this town our families built go to the far reaching plutocrats and their spawns is so sad for me to watch. And you are right about the congestion charge. Screw them!

Important discussion but any defense of congestion pricing while the amount of systemic waste and neglect in public transport is ludicrous. It will not force more to ride public transport. Public transportation couldn’t handle it if it did. It simple will immediately increase cost of goods delivered to small businesses throughout NYC.

I wish you could do a similar talk in Montreal. Our train line going north (Deux-Montagnes) to where I live will be completely shut down in 2020. It's hell. My kids will be stuck in this mess as they will ne commuting to town for university and cegep (college). People are moving away.

This was a great episode. Great granular explanation of the issues in a pragmatic problem solving approach. Makes you long for the (probably nonexistent) non partisan competence approach to infrastructure of the past.
