I'll say it once more; SEEKING ASYLUM IS NOT ILLEGAL. I will be calling my reps tomorrow and I hope you join me. Thank you @padmalakshmi 💜. . . #Repost @padmalakshmi
While we celebrate the Fourth, there are refugee families who’ve walked thousands of miles to legally seek asylum in this country sleeping on concrete floors with aluminum blankets and no medical care. This is a stain on our nation and we need to do something now. Contact your representatives tomorrow to demand they #CloseTheCamps. (Link in bio) #4thofjuly #AmericanPie #resist

@razinkane78 Thanks for the statistic :) Also, just FYI - I see what you’re saying when it comes to a lot of people who abuse the system. You need to understand that seeking asylum, no matter how you enter a country or whether you have documentation, etc, is not illegal. Both the US and Australia are signatories to the UN convention regarding asylum seekers. They’re excluded from the definition of “illegal entrants” IF their claim for asylum is made out. That application needs to be processed first before they can be deemed an illegal entrant. Someone can’t stop them and say “too bad, you entered illegally, back you go”. That’s why their application needs to be processed (to do background checks, etc). People don’t “disappear before asylum hearings”. There’s no hearings to decide whether they meet asylum status. There are hearings when they’re challenging a decision that they don’t meet that status. That’s my understanding - correct me if I’m wrong. But what are the statistics of people who “disappear” and are they genuine asylum seekers, or people trying to claim asylum who are lying and ruining it for genuine asylum seekers? Please understand that by the very nature of an asylum application, it’s not always possible to apply in advance for legal entry into a country. Not everyone that applies for asylum has that chance - a lot of people who apply for asylum are fleeing war and other terrible situations. An asylum seeker is not an illegal entrant until their claim for asylum is refused. Only then are they and can they be returned to their home country.

@supermom_kelli If it helps, the US is a signatory to the UN convention regarding asylum seekers (or refugees). It’s also implemented into law. The convention states a person can seek asylum by any means necessary, including crossing a border illegally, not having the required documents, etc. A person seeking asylum must have their application processed - they can’t be turned around back to their country for the way they entered the country. They’re an exception to illegal immigrant status. Why? A) the situation in their home country doesn’t always allow them to apply via legal channels - there may also be a lot of corruption when it comes to applying for legal entry into the US on the part of authorities in their country. A lot of people are also fleeing violence and war and don’t have the chance to sit and wait for legal entry. B) an asylum application, by its very nature, means asylum - protection and shelter danger. A person seeking asylum is not and cannot be deemed an illegal entrant until that application for asylum is processed.

This is hard to see because I don’t have a political genre I align with whole-heartedly; yet at the same time IM UPSET. I have had the fortune of working with so many brilliant, multilingual, amazing people who weren’t born American but who came here on a work visa or otherwise and turned that into an amazing, thriving career. I’ve witnessed these people have flourishing lives, friends, and families— yet I’ve watched them send their families home when it was the right thing to do legally. I’ve watched my brilliant friends be victimized by my system and it sickens me.

@razinkane78 you do what you have to do to protect your family. And while we’re on the subject, aren’t states trying to pass laws that take women’s rights away? We live in the times where people think it’s their duty to force females to have unwanted children, tie their hands in the decision making and silence them. It’s happening all around the world at alarming rates. Show some compassion god knows people could some.

@heyitsmezzalenko Thanks for information! I still feel like our system is being abused by too many who truly don’t need asylum. But your answer should shut down all the celebrities who are calling to close the camps. If these people are coming here to be protected and sheltered, then I would assume they would be happy in a camp that actually does that while their request for asylum is handled!
