For nearly a decade, Ralph Lauren was honored to contribute to the preservation of one of America’s most cherished treasures: the Star-Spangled Banner, the battle-torn flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the lyrics of our national anthem. More than 50 international experts— conservators, curators, historians, engineers, and organic scientists —joined the effort to preserve the flag’s delicate fibers, for which a special gallery was constructed at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. It was there, in 2014, that Mr. Lauren was presented with the James Smithson Bicentennial Medal for his patriotism and philanthropy in helping to honor this pivotal piece of American history.
