@ali.zwemke everything you said makes sense except for a couple things. First, although she's supposed to be from Norway, Ariel's ethnicity has no relevancy to the story whatsoever. None. Not like Mulan's, Merida's or Pocahontas'. So why can't it be changed along with the location? Also, saying that if you were to white wash a film today the backlash would be high is incredibly ignorant mostly because you don't even need to. There are soooooooo many caucasian roles in Hollywood it's insane so why you felt the need to try and make that comparison is beyond me. Yes, it's a business move on their part too but you think if roles were somewhat balanced all across the board people would be changing existing characters' ethnicities? We grew up with a redhead Ariel and a bunch of caucasian princesses except for Mulan and Pocahontas and then later on, Tiana. When Tiana came along it was so weird and fantastical to my niece and her excitement watching a princess that looked like her was honestly heartwarming. That should show you how much of a problem this is. That a kid would get dumbfounded from seeing a black princess in a kid's movie. Hopefully, the next generation won't have a representation problem and there won't be a need for conversations like these.

@quiqet20 actually it’s never been confirmed where the movie actually takes place some say Caribbean some say Denmark some say the Mediterranean and yes thought not all people that are Caribbean are black I’m just saying cool the they chose and amazing singer, someone that can portray Ariel’s innocence (I of her most important attributes) and who just happens to be black! It’s not one or the other just because they can and should create new character that can be black doesn’t me a fictional character can’t be played by a black actress..... and no her being white in not “so important”

@issamrt I totally agree I don't want to make it sound racist but Lion King already has a all black cast but 3 and now they wanna make Ariel as black???? So what's prince Eric going to be? Are they going to make it a different race movie. I mean that would be nice but have a different story with different people. Not Disney princess we grew up on and then 10 years later change the race of the princess... I'm so confused

The thing is Ariel is a MERMAID and mermaids have NO RACE. Every other princess has a set race and identity. I understand you want the mermaid that was on Disney before but who’s to say this one won’t be amazing too. Give it a chance before you shoot it down. Be happy for her! If you’re “all for diversity” like you’re saying, just see what Disney does with this! I’m sure they made the decision for a reason.

@mmmairaa The movie actually takes place in Norway not the Caribbean. In that place in the world there is mostly white people. Also not all Caribbean people are black. As for your fact that there is enough white princess that is true but instead of remaking an original princess into a different ethnicity they need to make new princesses. Which can also be done. Surprise!!

@jen_reinken (sigh) I can tell you’re definitely a true American… Well let me tell you what happens outside of this the USA.. Danish people living in that area there are Vietnamese, Thai, Lebanese, Jewish, afghans, Egyptians and I can go on and on… So when you say “Danish”what exactly are you talking about Jen?
