On July 1st, 1934, Hitler ordered the SS to kill Ernst Röhm, a high-ranking Nazi and cabinet minister in the government. As many as 200 people—from Nazi officials to political enemies of Hitler—were also killed in the same action, now known as either The Night of the Long Knives or the Röhm purge.

This massacre was one of the final steps in the Nazi party’s plan to turn Hitler from a politically appointed chancellor to a dictator. Germany was already a one-party state after all opposition parties were banned or dissolved in 1933, the Reichstag fire had already given Hitler the opportunity to declare a state of emergency and suspend civil rights, and legislative power had already been stripped from the elected parliament and given to Hitler’s cabinet.

The primary target of the killing were high-ranking officials in the SA, the Nazi Party’s paramilitary organization. In 1934, the SA boasted ranks of 3 million troops, dwarfing the German army’s 100,000. Röhm was the head of the SA, and threatened to absorb the Germany army under his control and carry out a “second revolution.” Fearful of his radical designs, the military and the non-Nazi parts of the German government demanded that Hitler remove the SA threat, otherwise they would unseat him and declare martial law. When Hitler gave the order to kill his old comrade Röhm, he ensured three things: an opportunity to massacre his political opposition as part of the same action, the respect and loyalty of the German army (avoiding martial law), and a powerful show of strength to his enemies.
It worked. When Germany’s president, Paul von Hindenburg, died one month later, Hitler proclaimed himself Führer (leader) of Germany and succeeded in claiming absolute power.

The purge of the SA also allowed the SS, its rival organization run by Heinrich Himmler, to become the Nazi party’s elite militia. The SS performed most of the killings during the Night of the Long Knives, and later became infamous as a key perpetrator of the Holocaust.
