It seems as if you just can’t escape remakes or reboots nowadays. So many classics being remade and never quite living up to the original. #ChildsPlay was an odd movie to remake. Not because it’s hard to remake the iconic #Chucky, but because the original series is still going on as we speak with straight to video sequels and a supposed tv show in the works. Good Guy Dolls was renamed to “Buddi” dolls and Chucky has a big makeover which at first seemed extremely stupid. I was highly skeptical of this movie at first as I am with all remakes and reboots, but I’ve always been a die hard fan of Chucky. #Halloween delivered what I wanted in a true sequel with last years sequel/reboot, so could Child’s Play actually do the same?
Child’s Play is nothing like you’d expect. Though it is indeed a remake, it is truly an actual remake. What I mean by that is that the movie is almost completely different from the original other than the fact it uses the same main characters. The movie has you laughing a lot more than you’d expect. Very early on in the movie you know just how different this version is and it works in more ways than you’d expect. What was once a serial killer’s soul trapped in a children’s doll is now a malfunctioned clingy doll that wants Andy all to himself. It’s weird to see Chucky wanting to be Andy’s best buddy rather than trying to kill him or transfer his soul into his body. The movie is violent, surprisingly funny, and best of all it’s fresh. Though it’s something we are familiar with, it felt new. Child’s Play surprised me in more ways I could ever imagine and I was very pleased with the outcome. Once you get used to his look and his new overly attached emotional side, you’ll be best friends with Chucky. I do recommend this and remember this is a whole new take on the classic.
