The first stone of the Sagrada Familia was laid more than 130 years ago. Thanks to an influx of funding, some striking innovations and a lot of old-fashioned craftsmanship, the famously unfinished church is now on schedule to be completed in 2026, the 100th anniversary of the death of its architect, Antoni Gaudí. Today, more than two dozen architects are working on the project — most of them local Catalans — and 200 workers in total are involved in construction. But making the deadline will mean overcoming technical complications, theological doubts and several blocks’ worth of outraged residents. At a time when Barcelona is grappling with an unprecedented tourist influx that is challenging the idea of what the city should be, the plans for the church risk deepening social and political divisions. And just like the reconstruction of Notre Dame in Paris, the project to finish the Sagrada Familia has triggered impassioned debates over the proper role of iconic historical buildings in a modern city. Mentioning that most architects working on this are “catalan” just reflects how sectarian these “Catalan” have become... and how good they are in selling that. They managed to get that irrelevant “fact” into this piece of supposedly “important” and “serious” news... Spanish, Catalan, Barcelonians... from the Rabal neighborhood... whatever, who cares.

I know this comment is probably going to get lost in here but I just want you to know I'm no TIME but I am an amature photographer with some interesting shots. If you're so keen, feel free to take a gander??

Just went to Sagrada Familia in 2018, it's really really impressive & my favorite cathedral. When it's completed in 2026, will definitely go to Barcelona again to see this masterpiece ?

Floridians joke about the Majesty Building (“I-4 eyesore”) taking forever to building. It’s been under construction since 2001. Well at least this building here is fun to look at
