When I first visited El Salvador in 2006, within minutes of arriving in the capitol, we received a call that a man had just been assassinated a couple of miles from where we were. It was one of numerous murders that took place during the 10 days that I was there. Since then that country has descended into such chaos that its become the most murderous region on the planet. It’s not surprising that Oscar Martinez would want to try and take his beloved Angie and escape the egregious violence and poverty in his home country. What father wouldn’t want to try to provide a better life for his child? Given the role that our country has played in El Salvador’s decades long demise, I wonder what our role should be now be in helping the people most affected by chaos? I will never be able to erase the image of Angie’s arm around her father’s neck as they lay face down in murky waters. This is not who we are.

Too give their children, grandchildren, me a better life. This is what America is based on. Every Americans grandparents or great grandparent came from another country too give their future generations a better life, this is all he wanted for Angie. Who is government too deny that? Because after all their great grandparents did the same thing.

amanda_claribel_martinez Thank you @amberrosetamblyn and @lisalingstagram for using your platform to bring awareness to the world/followers of the travesty of what this government has allowed to happen and to continue to happen. They have no shame. They have no heart. How can they continue to allow this to happen? The babies/toddlers/teenagers being held in prison like facilities with the bare minimum so that these facilities/privately owned millionaires can profit from the travesties of human lives.

bellaa_chic @albalupelozano ugh it's so heartbreaking. I feel the same as you and I hate this country right now. I dont care where people come from, we are all humans and nobody deserves to suffer. How anyone can condone this, is beyond me. Nobody has empathy. How can you not put yourself in these people's shoes and imagine if it was you and your children trying to escape a terrifying life, only to be dealing w something just as terrifying and awful in these camps?

v_alquijay 100%! We (U.S.) are to blame for the corrupt and dangerous climate in Central American countries. It is our responsibility 1) to take ownership and accountability 2) to have compassion and 3) to be the change that not only compensates the egregious behavior but advocates for the humane treatment of all individuals regardless of where they come from.

rockyracun This is who “we” as a colonized nation has been though ... who we are. For black and brown folx, this has always been America. I think we need to frame it that way. Instead of saying “this is not who we are”, we should say “this is not who we want to be anymore”. It’s time to be accountable- my people’s history needs to be seen and acknowledged.
