The cub and its mom Moonlight appear to be doing well. Moonlight has been very attentive nursing and grooming the cub. Keepers are cautiously optimistic that the cub will continue to grow and thrive, though the first weeks are the most critical. They were able to weigh the cub June 19 and it was about 6 ounces (172 grams), which is normal for a red panda cub. Red pandas are endangered primarily due to habitat loss related to human activities. Scientists think their numbers in the wild have decreased by 50 percent in the last two decades.
